    New MODERN Series owner

    Hi Guys
    Just joined your club.
1999 TD5 Extreme,148000ks,in very good nick.Bought for next to nothing!!!!
    Already got my head around the TD5 bit,being a D2 TD5 pilot.
Just drove the new Defer home tonite, got a few questions.
Heater, dosnt produce any hot air.The hot cold slide doesnt seem to be engaging anything.Havent looked under the bonnet as its dark, any common faults here????
The switch at the LHS on the instruments, has a fan icon and 2 on it,what does it do,doesnt want to move, havent tried any force.
What happened to the Series floorboard heating system????? could have used it tonite!!!!!!
ABS light stays on for 5 mins and goes.I cant Nanocom just yet as I never entered the Defender unlock codes into mine, just need to find them and do so.It has a turbo timer and electric brake controler,do these cause this???
Seems to be a warning beeper when first starting????Like a muffled reverse beeper?????goes for 30 seconds or so.
This runs HEAPS cooler than my D2 TD5.80deg most of the time,84 was the higest I saw.Perhaps it was a good move buying that new radiator for the D2,its still sitting in its box!!!
Im sure I will have LOTS more questions.

Hope I can help. The fan only seems to operate when the two temp. heater controls are set for heat. The fan only operates on setting two, the other settings are to adjust airflow from the intake, as if. I only found this out when the dealer had to replace the fan moter in our 90, cost them about $800 all up for the job as the air con unit ect has to be removed. I hope yours is just cable adjustment. Ours seems to run cooler than the Puma but in summer I think this could be a plus. Good luck with your new vehicle.

Hmm, my Tdi has two fan speeds, as Alan said the first portion just progressively opens the flap in the ventilation box, the last two stops are the fan. Oh, and the fan should work regardless of where the heater is set.

As for the heater, when you look under the bonnet you will see two control cables going to the heater box, the heater one opens a flap that lets the air flow through the heater core, water goes through all the time.

The cable can jam inside the outer, it can pull through the clamp on the lever at the heater box.

None of my controls worked when I bought the beast with less than three years of use.
I had to strip everything and used copious amounts of bike chain lube down the cable (Rock-n-roll, it's a dry lube, that the carrier solvent evaporates after a little while) and I've never had a problem in the last near eight years.

Also check that the seal at the bottom of the core is sealing the core to the box. This can fail and let under bonnet air in all the time.
Bloody uncomfortable in summer dragging all that hot underbonnet air in.

My old 300 TDI also had 2 speeds, don't know why they changed the TD5 as they both have same control levers

About the same distance as the other two levers. their is a click felt when it switches the fan on at the bottom of the slide.

We have gone over our monthly broadband limit,so it could be part of the issue.
