Drove the same for a few years.. it never needed a top-up between changes..
Have a 93 Defender 200tdi, 140000k's (genuine, log books). Only done about 800ks in her so far but just wondering if these engines use any oil as a rule? Certainly doesn't blow any smoke to speak of. I just checked it then and it was on the low side but I haven't checked it since I bought i so will keep an eye on it.

I take it you didn't check it straight after a drive.
I always check my vehicles cold. I figure it they're low when cold and all the oil drained down will even be worse when warm
The 200Tdi unless it has had a history of excessive idling and some oil leaks, is usually a non consumer of oil between changes. Well, at the most 500mls or thereabouts.
I haven't known ANY to have a consumption problem apart from leaking...
Enjoy it, they are a great little engine

OK, mines a 300 and not a 200, but it's done damned near 270,000km now and doesn't use a drop in almost 10,000km, once I installed new valve stem seals 25,000km ago. (three were floating with the stems instead of being pushed onto the valve guide)
Even then it only consumed around 600ml/10,000km.
Rick, I have a 300 Tdi customer with 540K, and it requires no top ups in 10K intervals. At most, 500ml is gone when it came time for service.
This engine has always done long runs, and regularly serviced. The owner NEVER idled it longer than necessary, which for a small diesel engine is an important factor in good ring to bore sealing. The vehicle is a 1 owner.

Yep JC, the lack of idleing is important in any diesel IMO, which goes against all we were taught as kids.
One of the fella's I go to for oil and diesel advise is an advisor to the trucking industry and ran his own fleet for years.
If any driver was found to have idled his truck for longer than 2.5 minutes at any time he got a please explain.
If it happened twice it was grounds for penalties.
That's interesting. What is the science/engineering behind that?
