Whats the best Sunday afternoon drive (4wd!) in Brisbane?

Went up Duck Creek Road (Beaudesert to O'Reillys) on Monday in the D3 and after all the rain was expecting it may be closed, but NO - it was great fun!

The road has really split apart though and was pretty loose, there were plenty of little land slides and boulders to dodge...I think it took about 40 minutes each way (plus the hr from home). The fords at the bottom were 12-24 inches in places and gave the car a good under wash after all the mud at the top.

Used high range all the way, off road height and gravel mode selected, then used mud ruts at the top in the gooey bits.

Any other offers...?

Condamine river road & up to Queen Mary Falls is a great day trip (depending on how far you have to go to get there), & will certainly test out the truck after all of this rain. Several creek crossings ect. Best to check if its open before leaving home though. I did it a few months ago, before the big wet in my D3.

I'd have to agree with disco3QLD the condamine ck rd was always my favourite when i was in Brisvegas however lacey's ck can be good fun with a little wet , that's if it is still open!.
However if you can spare an extra day, all through Jimna state forest at any time, up past Booloomba falls etc and try to track down little summer ck rd, was an excellent track when we first found it { ex fire break trail}. although i did hear that they have opened it up now ie; dozed the track etc, not sure if thats true.I assume you mean to do some challenging 4wding?? and get into some excellent scenery.

I reckon one of the best i Mount Mee - and the A Break there after a lot of rain. The hill gets very rutted and becomes a dead set axle twister but on a very large incline. I used to attack it after rains and have fun watching Pajero's bottoming out and slithering back down. The A break when its not rutted is just a drive up a hill and the remainder is tame, but really nice country.

At the moment everything is wet. EVen if you could make it you;d tear the places up which I'd prefer you didn;t do.

Our club also got an email from Forestry Qld stating that the forests are closed due to the weather.

I have done the Queen Mary Falls run in my old Territory a couple of years ago. It was no challenge at even with the Territory's limited off road ability. We even had a RWD Territory with us.

That said I would love to do the run again in the D4.... When it dries out a bit more.

Is there any interest in a group day run out to Queen Mary Falls?

Its a top spot for a BBQ and an easy bush walk.

We did the Condamine River Rd the day after we got the disco a couple of months back - just as a tester of course and yeah it was fun going through 2 ft of water a couple of times - the old Santa Fe would have gone nowhere near it!

Do fancy giving Mt Mee a go...

Went to Bribie Island a couple of days ago (when it was sunny) (it's been hosing again in Brissy ). I'd never been offroad there before and know nothing about what you can do.

My neighbour had told me about the loop up the beach and down the internal so I was hoping to do at least that and then explore and try to work out where you can and cannot go.

Unfortunately the middle track is closed due to all the rain. Don't know if it's flooded or torn up. So it was basically just up the Eastern Beach.

It was still great fun and did a bit of fishing and swimming with the wife and kids.

Oh and almost managed to get myself bogged....LOL!!!....which would have been embarassing with all the traffic there.....

I was down to 18psi (19" wheels), was in low range with sand selected. I had already driven into check out one of the campsites and I had had to go over some pretty deep, powdery sand to climb up the dune to the track...which I did with no effort at all. I was quite chuffed.

A bit further up the beach, an almost identical scenario...bit of an incline up the dune, same sand conditions. This time I was going probably 5-10kph slower...went straight under. I tried to increase speed but it was too late...just dug in further as the incline increased. I stopped before I got stuck though. Didn't try rock-crawl but definately wasn't getting anwhere in sand mode. I guess the incline was making it tough. However, I made sure I didn't get too deep and the D4 backed out with no fuss. Gave it a bit more stick in the second attempt and no worries at all. It's amazing how just a few clicks per hour can make all the difference.

It was the first test for the compressor I got for Xmas. A Projecta Typhoon. It worked pretty well and aired up the tyres really quicly. Dunno much about them, so I hope it will last.

I bought a yearly permit and hopefully will be able to do more exploring soon. It's a lovely place, reminded me of Fraser.

Anybody got any info/experience on Bribie?

Saw a black D4 there too, shared a mutual smile as we passed each other. Heaps of D1s and 2s though.

Bribie is pretty easy going (for a D3 or 4) under normal conditions. It's just the crossover from bush to beach gets pretty soft from all the traffic. I would imagine the middle road is closed more for preservation. You can get a map from where you get your permit or the ranger for track details and current conditions. Mind you it's an island so you would have to be really trying to get too lost.
You've also got to keep an eye on the tide times during certain times of the year. Same as most islands I guess.
