Child seat anchor points for Defender 130

    Hi,

I've spent the last couple of hours reading the many threads on this topic and to be honest I'm really no further ahead as the rules seem to have changed over the period many of the posts cover.

We're selling our 1996 D130 Daul cab and a couple who are interested in buying it have children and need to be able to mount two child seats in the rear seats. Can someone please update the latest situation on the availablity of compliant solutions and/or suppliers that they have experience with that may be able to helpout. The couple are Sydney based so they'd come under the NSW rules.

Better still, if someone has a NSW compliant solution for a 1996 D130 that they no longer required and would consider selling, please send me a PM.

    Cheers, LandieMan

Not much help, but I'm going through the same process on my new 130 right now. These dudes Restraints :: Australian Auto Fashions | Belmore Auto Conversions | Autoseat Conversions are investigating the options for NSW compliant restraints. I took my car there a week ago for them to have a look and haven't heard back yet - just called them up and expecting to hear something Monday or Tuesday.

I will update here once I find out. I do know that the solution used in Victoria cant be used in NSW (plates on the back of the cab) - at least thats what the RTA engineer dude told me.

    Cheers,

    Adam

    Thanks Adam,

When you say "new" 130, how new? It's "kind-of" understandly that our 1996 D130 doesn't have them as times have changed, but surely Land Rover have a factory solution for more recent models.

Hey mate, its just new to me - a '99 model. Nothing different to yours though in terms of the inside or fitting restraints. AFAIK there is no "factory" option for child restraints in a new Puma defender either.

I investigated a few options, including the one for other crew cab vehicles (a plate that runs vertically down the back window) but because of the alloy body these options cant be "engineered" for use on the landy.

    Cheers,

    Adam

    child seat restraints

I've had three child seat restraints installed in my 110 by Karlisles (Karlisle's). Reasonably happy with the job, no protruding bars, just plates engineered into rear of seats, with engineers certificate (although I still havn't recieved the blue slip from the RTA)
    They may do 90's.

I was told by the RTA that in NSW you must be able to access the attachment point from outside the car with the door open (or something along these lines) - this would rule out a back-of-seat point for a 130.

The guys who looked at mine want to put the attachment under the seat (can access that easily from outside the car with the door open) and run the tether around a CRAB bar (tautology? maybe...) behind the top of the seat.

    Hi All,
I've recently bought my 99 defender 130 and am looking for a solution now. i am meeting with an auto engineer on tuesday to look at some options. He estimates his costs will be around $1200.00 and i should be able to do the work myself. Pretty expensive restraint points but i'd rather know that they will be right if we had an accident. let you know how i go.

    Hi,

My 1998 130 has 3 child mounting points across the back which are QLD Dept of Transport approved.

The two outer seats have mounts bolted to the vertical bars that sit behind the seat. The middle seat has a mounting point through the bulkhead and is plated on the under side with a section of 5mm steel plate.

See picture. This is not my truck, but you can see the black steel supports that can be simply drilled about half way up and the child anchor point can be bolted to this (using HT bolts, nyloc nuts). For the middle seat. I just have an anchor point drilled through the flat section of panel at the base of the rear bulkhead.

    Cheers

    Hi
I have 1996 defender 130 and 3 kids. I exhausted all the options 6 years back and no one would certify mounts in NSW. Since then the rules changed so you need to be able to undo the clip from without tools while the child is in the seat. Ie needs to be in clear view etc.
Due to lack of space behind seats and on mine seat back held by bolts there was no solution.

Several engineers told me what was strong enough for the safety of my kids and suggested thats what to do and say it was there when I bought it.
I have a solid aluminium bar 20mm x 50mm bolted to the vertical steel frames behind the seat. Very secure. I have a safety hammer with seatbelt webbing cutter handy incase need to get the kids out in emergency

I have a friend with another brand dual cab and the thing fitted to his as approved makes the seat useless for adults. CRAB bars dont work in 130s as the mount points not there as they are corner windows.

As the kids turn 7 they no longer require the tethered seats. So still 2 years to go for me. Next problem is when last child gets out of tethered seat I want a lap/ sash belt in the centre. I am looking at seats with integral belts to replace the whole back seat. Often called van seats they can have child seat mounts too.

    Regards
    James
