Steering Tube Length

Can anybody give me the correct length of a longitudinal steering tube for a Series 1 88/109". (That's the one between the box and the relay).
They're a different part no.from all other series 1s and 2s and therefore I suspect a different length.

I'd be genuinely surprised if they are a different length from the Series 2a, even if the part number is different - I don't think the position of the relay and steering box changed. But I don't have one to check, and even if I did, there is no way of knowing whether it is original.

Well that was interesting.
Firstly I must appologise for using metric as being series they should have been measured in imperial but I grabbed the first tape in the shed and by the time I walked down to the Sacred Site it was too late to go back and change tapes.
Both the 86" and 88" measured 580mm.
A couple of 80" were 593mm.
For fun I checked a S2 570mm.

For a daily driver I will put a S2 steering box in a 80" with a tdi so the S2 rod being shorter will be the way to go. Lets you mount the box a bit further away from the bulkhead.

The S1 88/109 is a strange beast indeed.The bumper to bumper measurement is the same as on an 86/107, But they moved the front axle forward by 2" and extended the mudguard and bonnet by 1" only. Therefore the distance from the steering box to the relay has only increased by 1" and not 2" as one would expect.The drop arm has got the offset towards the engine and hasn't got the wide locating splines and can be mounted in any position. I think there must be quite a few 88/109s around with wrong parts fitted.
