    Intercooler Mounts

    Guys,

    I have been summoning the courage to fork out for a few performance tweaks on my 06' Td5.

    List is currently; EGR removal, front 'silencer' removal (do i need to replace the dump pipe as well?), large intercooler & hoses, chipping.

    I was just about to push the button on a ~$1000- kit out of Allards in the UK when this cooler came up on fleabay;

    Discovery 2 TD5 ALLARD Turbo Performance Intercooler (eBay item 150627757684 end time 11-Jul-11 18:10:08 AEST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

    It could represent a significant saving.

    SOOOOO my question is;

    Is the intercooler mounting system common between Disco's and Defenders? Everyones pictures make it look like they are the same unit yet the part numbers are always different. Does everyone just use a stock photo?
    Are the units interchangeable between the two models?

    Thanks Heaps
    Shane

    Hi Shane,
    I have the ASE one fitted to my Defender and they are for the Disco as well so the Allard one should fit both.

    Have a look here, you should find all you are after.

    Hey Squirel,

    The header tanks and brackets look different to me, I just installed a Alli-Sport from the UK.

    It is a tight sqeeze to fit the larger intercooler in, so it all needs to be spot on.

    Search thread "PUMA performance up grade" for some pic's.

    Talk to Andrew from Allisport, he will be happy to send one over, mine only took 5 days.

    Cheers

    i think they are different(def to d2), I have an ase one on my defender.

    Being a late modle td5 it would be worth upgrading the dump pipe to de cat pipe either from a early td5 or from td5 alive etc.

    Or take it to your local exhuast shop and get them to remove it and bend up a centre box replacement.

    If you are in brisbane I have an early dump you can have cheap.

    Drover,

    Did you switch the air-con condensor to be between the intercooler and radiator while you were at it?
    I 1/2 pulled the front end apart over the weekend to try and measure things up. The aircon looks to block a fair bit of air to the intercooler. Would it be worth switching them to get a better charge?

    Benny,

    Whats the difference in the dump pipes? Do the earlier ones not have the flex joint fitted?
    Do I need to get rid of of the flex joint as well as the first muffler/cat?

    early dump pipes have no cat fitted,

    The flex is 100% needed on a diesel 4x4

    Hey Squirrel,

    No, the A/C condenser is very thin and is not likely to restrict the air flow to much. Unlike the intercooler or radiator the condenser is not dealing with extreme temperature.

    The new intercooler is well over twice the size of the standard and should ( and does ) prove very effective.

    Cheers

    Thanks Tombie!
    I was only going on the ASE website which uses the same pic for both Def and Disco and refers to both as defender in the details.

    Glad I didn't get a second hand disco one.
