    Drum Brake Shoe Removal

    Hi All,
I've started the brake over-haul of my 61 Series 2 - with the help of a friend.
How do I remove the drum shoes?
Do I need to purchase the special tool (looks like a pair of pliers with a 90 degree bend in it)? Can I purchase at Autobard/Super Cheap/Auto Pro, etc?

-One wheel had no drum shoes fitted!
-One wheel he removed using the special tool.
-One wheel the springs were broken - so the shoes just lifted out!

So I only have 1 wheel left. I am happy to purchase the tool, as I assume that I will need it to re-fit the shoes?

Unless somebody has a handy trick?

As always - thanks for your advice, I'd be lost without this forum...

In fifty years of working on them, I have never used a special tool, just a large screwdriver, although I believe the special tool does help!

    spring tools

    Hi Grey ghost

X3, a large screwdriver, also you must hold your mouth at a certain angle, obscenities should be used sparingly along with a hammer, but preferably without your digits being in the way.

Australian drum brake Landrover special tool: 1x 12inch heavy duty screwdriver with a second larger one for a spare

make sure that the shoes are sitting at 90 degrees to the backing plate use a set square, there are little adjusting screws poking through from the rear of the backing plate, that way you will get full contact with the drum and efficient braking

    cheers
