			Engine Fumes in cabin.

My exhaust ends just outboard of the rear LH side. When I drive with windows closed, no fumes. When I drive with the RH drivers window open I get lots of fumes. My tailgate door seals poorly so I can only think that fumes are drawn in the rear when the window is open which seems a bit counter intuitive.

Any advice or ideas on what the problem might be would be appreciated.

 Regards

 Jim

			leaks ?

Hi sorry to hear your woes the only thing I can think of is there might be a exhaust leak some where and your ducting for your fan and heating would be taking it up some where in the engine bay, or through your fire wall some where.
Sorry if this is of no help

This is a common problem with any leaking rear tailgate/boot seal. Opening the side windows creates a partial vacuum in the vehicle and the backwash behind the vehicle will find its way in quite easily as it is under slight pressure. It's why wagons driven on dirt roads are always covered in crud all over the back face.

Your exhaust needs to extend right into the side slipstream of the vehicle so it can't be sucked in the back. Legally this is difficult, as only right hand side sideways facing exits are allowed. Otherwise you need to make sure all rear door seals are perfect.

					Hi Jim,
Check your rear door isn't buckled due to the weight of the spare wheel. The frame inside the door often cracks allowing it to flex.
 Cheers,
 Danny

This is why the ex-Army Series soft top owners roll the canvas sides up but leave the back down. Exhaust sucks through the back otherwise.

Good to meet you at ABD Jim!
