Maxidrive recovery points

Have been digging around a few days for some suitable recovery points for the front of a Puma 130. The only option I have found so far are these from MR Automotive (made by maxidrive).

I gave them a call and the person I spoke to had no idea if they were rated or not. Anyone know if they are suitable and rated as recovery points?

These recovery fixings have been discussed on the forum before (see Puma recovery points). Personally, I think they are dangerous and would not go near them. I suggest you have a look at a pair of Jate Rings. They replace the lashing eyes and use the same holes in the chassis. The original forged ones are supposedly the best. They should be used in pairs with a bridle.

oh boy - recovery points are a can of worms and I don't think I have read anywhere a definitive way to go. Its very poor they leave the factory without anything in place.

How are the (unrated?!) Jate Rings fitted? From what I understand they would go through the bottom hole circled below. Not sure this would work with an ARB bullbar would it?

I assume the maxidrive ones would go through both bolts circled.

Are there other alternatives that can be recommend for the front?

Your circled locations are correct. Jate Rings are 'unrated' like much military equipment but I understand that unofficially they are rated at 8 tons. They are like very large D shackles with the 'bolt' passing through the chassis leaving the curved part straddling the chassis. They look like this:



Slightly modified versions are available that allow for steering guard attachments etc. They look like this:


There are various flat bar welded versions of unknown quality like this example:

The obvious question is, does your ARB bullbar not have recover points? Certainly winch bars usually have them to facilitate double line winching.

Ahh great i think the penny has just dropped - sorry it is obvious but my mind was not there. My previous 4wd had a hook underneath so was not even looking for anything on the bullbar.

Can I confirm this is where I should be recovering from?

Yes. Most definitely. And where it is possible use a bridle to spread the load.

I am now saving up for the OEM Landrover bar and Warn Winch, in the 07 Defender accessory catalogue, which has recovery points on it. However I have also been told by a few people that you should not recover off a bull bar.

Where can you buy Jate Rings from in Australia?

The OEM winch-bar and winch are expensive. The winch-bar is made for Land Rover by Mantec (see http://www.mantec.co.uk/). You could import a winch-bar from them at a considerable cost saving and then choose your winch of choice. Mantec offer a range of winch-bars to suit different winches. That said, when I bought my D90 last year, I got the OEM winch, winch-bar and A-bar. The recovery points on the bar are inline with the chassis rails and any load would be directly back to the chassis.

As for Jate Rings (Part No. RRC3237) in Australia, there are (non-original)welded ones from Land Rover Tuning ($110 pair) (see http://www.landrovertuning.com.au/shop/catalogsearch/result/?q=jate&x=21&y=11) and original ones from Les Richmond Automotive ($86 each) (see Les Richmond Automotive). They would certainly be cheaper to import (do a Google search on the Part No. to find suppliers). They are often listed on UK Ebay (eBay - one of the UK's largest shopping destinations).
