ok its new as in its a ford OR its new as in its new to you and youve purchased a trade in vehicle?
Hi guys, I think I have a small problem with my Defender.. its' new (well about four months old) and recently - not too long after it's first service - I noticed that it has been blowing smoke to the extent that it's turned the black mud flap below the exhaust black with soot... I don't know when it's blowing the smoke (start up or while running) but I'm thinking that it shouldn't be blowing enough to cover the mud flap..??
Oh a side note, I don't know if this is relevant or not but it's been leaking oil from the rear pinion seal - I've had it replaced twice under warranty and will have to get it back in for a third replacement as it's leaking again..
I would appreciate any advice that you can give me..
Thanks..
Sue

Diesels blow smoke and soot up the corner the pipe comes out from,I'd only worry if it started using more fuel.Give the dealer a pineapple, the flange could have a mark on it that cuts the seal, after two the flange and seal should be replaced. Pat
If it is new as in a Puma,it seems like it is way to much smoke & needs to be seen to by the dealer, unless you are driving it like you stole it.I have followed the one my son has many times & it blows very little,if any smoke.
If it is an older one, dave blknight?
Good luck.
if its a proper engine then its been mistuned or is due a tune up.

Hi Sue,
It sounds like there is a little too much soot for a PUMA. It could possible be an intercooler hose has split or similar. The PUMA's bottom hose to the intercooler sits very close the steering shaft and on some actually rubs, it may have rubbed though or caused a split. It is easy to check, just look underneath and follow steering shaft along.
Is there any loss in power ?
I have had my rear diff pinion seal replaced 3 times. On the last occasion they fitted a new style seal, looks very different the original one. This one is going well, on leaks - so far.
Cheers
Sorry, I should have been a little clearer.. the car is new.. as in four months off the showroom floor.. it's had the first service (10,000 because I do a lot of k's getting to and from work).. and that's about the time the smoke started. It wasn't smoking at all before. I mentioned the pinion seal because I wasn't sure if it was related or not..
I'm not sure if my car is a Puma though???... I was not told what it was... just that it was a limited edition (40 in Australia)... yes I am an idiot.. *insert blushing smiley here*
Hi Sue,
Yes, your car is a 2.4 Tdci "Puma" Limited Edition Defender 90.
Sound's like they might have done something to the fuel mapping during diagnostics or possibly one of the other suggestions. Either way it's Land Rover's to fix. The pinion seal is not related...
An idiot? I think notJust smart because you actually asked for help
Instead of "insert blushing smiley here" it should read:
"Insert 143,253 other Land Rovers Owners who have asked a question on this forum".
I hope the problem is fixed
And if it is indeed a Limited Edition 90 - you, young lady, are the envy of many, many Old Codger Land Rover Owners.
