    rose tinted ?

    Hi guys,

Just thought someone might be able to shed some light on performance of my just bought 1999 110 Defender.
Driving it back from Woolongong this weekend I was struck by how slow it seemed compared to my last Defender, a 1994 110. It's been 3 years since my last Defender so maybe I've got rose tinted glasses with regard to normal on road performance. In fourth gear it sounds like it's really straining above 70kmh, in fifth gear above 100kmh and again sounds like it's straining... It's got a large bullbar and a winch which I'm thinking is weighing things down a bit. The millage is only 136k so I'd expect there to be lots of pep left in the old boy.
What do you reckon ? Is that normal ?

    Cheers

Hi Pushkin, if the vehicke is a TD5 then it should certainly be peppier than the older truck. Common things to check include ageing intake hoses which may be delaminating and blocking airflow and binding handbrake shoes. It is also possible the intercooler may be partially blocked. If a TD5, the mass airflow meter may be inoperative, giving incorrect or no information to the computer. There will be more-expert opinions offered in due course by other members of the forum. Cheers, 130man.

Thanks mate, was worried it was something serious - or worse, that was the expected performance! I'm taking it in for a 'root and branch' service next week. Don't have the area or tools to look after it myself...

Hi 130man, it's going in on Monday. Have quite a list of things I want them to check! Looking forward to getting the diagnosis

So dropped it into MCLR this morning for it's 120k service plus a complete checkup. I gotta say Melb Monday morning traffic down Swan St is no pleasant thing!
Got a call after lunch with the diagnosis; needs a new clutch master cylinder, steering drop arm and air intake sensor. The senior mechanic there took it for a spin and said it had been run in very slow. This sounds about right as the previous owner who had it from new was an elderly gentleman who had it as a retirement vehicle. The horrible squeak is not brake shoes but some corrosion on the rear discs. Gonna get them changed but it'll have to wait - a very expense business now that I don't work on it myself but pay someone else....
A few things to do but I'm pleased there's nothing too major
