Hill hold assist (maybe not)

I have a hill that I travel when I take the kids to school. In our touareg it holds the car (indefinitely even with 3.5 tonne behind), but in the disco it starts to move backwards a couple of seconds later...when I press the brake it will hold momentarily but not for more than a couple of seconds.

Is this the same with other D4's....and if so they need to rename to "hold hold assist for a few moments".

I am hoping that mine is faulty as its been a very handy feature on previous cars....and I use it for two trips a day for a number of times each trip.

Why not just put the handbrake on and when it comes time to drive off - just accelerate away as the handbrake auto releases.

I cannot speak about the D4 having Hill Hold Assist as the D3 doesn't have it - not really needed as the hand brake auto releases.

My TDV6 base model has this feature, it holds the brakes for about 3 seconds when on a slope - enough time to take your foot off the brake pedal and put it on the accelerator. On my R51 Pathfinder it worked the same way, and even when reversing up a hill (I haven't tried that in the D4 yet).

My D4 definitely holds on any slope/hill, but now I've read this, I couldn't say for sure if it's time limited ... need to go check!

Ok - Check done, went up to get some milk & bread as you do ...

On subtle uphill slopes it holds indefinately, better than average autos.

On more steep hills, it holds but only for perhaps 2 seconds tops, then releases & allows a SLOW roll backwards, still definitely holding some brake pressure though.

On subtle downhills after a full stop, there was no brake assistance perceivable at all, and it just rolls away easily.

On steep downhills after a full stop, it acts like Hill Decent Control(HDC) automatically, allowing a slow & steady roll.

Guess I am just a tad lazy. The touareg needs no brake input....just roll to a stop up hill, and it holds. Then hit the throttle and it releases. Might try the hand brake tomorrow.

Make the kids walk, or catch the bus... Then you don't need to even flick a finger to pull the hand brake on!!
