    series gearboxes

    attention aficionados!

not having a perchant for numbers and the like

could someone please enlighten this poor unenlightened soul

    gearbox prefix and suffixes

i know the "S" prefix is found on the top plate of said 11a all syncro boxes

    but

is the suffix at the end of the series gearbox serial number or is it located elsewhere?

mine is 151019057 and i cant see any letters hiding anywhere....

    and

how does one tell later transfer cases from earlier ones?

    PS.

i finally found the gearbox serial number on my shorty after several attempts over several years...... behind the overdrive gearlever support bracket :P

that part i know, oddly enough but the question about the suffix still stands

is it stamped after the serial number or is it a given from the serial number itself?

After. Just like a normal 11A number. Sometimes underneath the number.

Also series 1 and 11 had no suffix. Only 11A and 111. So your box doesn't have one and shouldn't.

The other point to note is that all Series gearboxes are interchangeable provided they are for the same engine type, with the proviso that the Series 1 clutch mechanism must use a Series 1,2 or 2a gearbox and if fitting a Series 3 box to a 2/2a or vice versa, you also have to swap the clutch slave cylinder and plumbing. All Series transfer cases are interchangeable (except, of course Stage 1).

    Ok Jim

I think that Dave wants to know the differences of a Series two transfer box.

Have a look at the back of the transfer box and you can see the intermediate gear shaft protruding, smaller diameter = series one and series two, larger diameter = series two A, in a nut shell give or take a couple of years.

The filler bung on the top as fitted to the series ones, disappeared after a while as the level bung was larger and you drip feed the transfer box its meal of EP90 with a bent tea spoon through this hole.

No suffix letter means earlier gearbox.
