MY11 90 Special Edition and long range tanks

Hi everyone. I have been trying to get long range tanks for my 90. I have tried ARB, TJM, Opposite lock and I finally thought I was on a winner when I took it to Long Range Automotive. Having arranged everthing I was told that it could not be fitted with the existing side protection runners. They had tried before and it was just too much fiddling to do it. Now I like the runners. Apart from the necesity of having something to put your foot on to get in and out they are nice and sturdy and look nice too .
    I'm now looking at alternatives:

Replacing the runners with 'something' else which I don't really want to do.

Putting a boab fuel tank under the false floor I made, sort of like a convenient sized jerry can if you like.

Mounting some jerries externally but I don't want them on the roof and I can't see anything around that would do.

And carrying some jerries inside the vehicle which I am also reluctant to do but have done in the past if I had to.

Any thoughts anyone might have on this would be deeply appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gwen

Opposite Lock told me that they could do it for mine..

I'm not sure what the legalities are for carrying Jerry cans in the actual car itself but suspect that it's not exactly kosher..

but I'm sure that someone here will have an answer for you!

I have the 110 special edition and just got a sheet metal shop to make me a tank that uses the side step mounts as well as to the chassis and fills from a filler in the quarter panel between the rear door and wheel arch.I'm going to take the cross bars off and the tank takes there place.I'm waiting for the filler pipe to arrive from the UK and fit it all up.It's going to cost about half what a normal LR tank will cost. Gwen,

Unfortunately the only option for more than one jerry can is the roof. When I go long distance I carry 2 doubles on the rear corners of a Wind Cheetah roof rack, but they are heavy and diesel is not the nicest of liquids around either...

My biggest issue with the Front Runner/Dolium tanks is the additional fillers that they need cutting into the body work. I’ve had them fitted in the past in 90’s that were a few years old, but I remain reluctant to have holes cut in the new one’s side panels. The tanks are really good kit and KarlB on the forum here has both installed and he’s very happy with them.

    Sue,

it would be great if OL can fit those with the steps, but I do think they will have to remove the steps and reinstall them afterwards with some modifications as they share mounting points...

I had a guy in Brisbane make a tank for me that fits under the sill He didn't have to remove the side step only the bracket that goes to the chassis.
He then welded an angle on the step suports and another on the chassis.
The tank holds 43lts. with about 41.5 useable.
He only made and fitted the tank and I done the rest pipe work and pump.
As mine was the first he has done it took him about 4hrs to fit but now he knows what to do he thinks about 2hrs to fit. It took me about 2hrs to work out the pipe work and about 4 days to work up the courage to cut a hole in the limited edition 90.

Do you have the limited edition 90?. (bronze and black).. and if not do you have the same style of side steps as it sounds like that is the main problem.. I would be interested to find out how much it cost to have the tank made and fitted.. and where you had it done?

The Front Runner aux tanks imported by Dolium will fit with some side runners/steps (see pictures here LR Def 90 TD5&2.4 RH Aux Tank - Dolium Pty Ltd). Some Opposite Lock stores may not be as knowledge about this as others. Maybe PM or telephone Mulgo. Daniel (Mulgo) is very knowledgeable about these things (though he is some distance from Cockatoo). There is certainly no issue with fitting them to an MY11 Special Edition (I have seen one installed by Mulgo).

    Cheers

    Karl,

To be honest I didn't realise from your photographs that yours was a special edition. If you don't mind me asking, which run of special editions was yours?

Mine is not a special edition Lou. A fellow in the local Land Rover club has a bronze one that has had a right hand aux tank fitted by Mulgo. He had Daniel make up a special fitting so he could use the original (single) filler.

    Cheers
