Hi Lucas,
I too surf and used to have a key in my legrope, no good with a Disco electronic key.
Buy one of these instead:
Secure storage of your keys | Seabreeze.com.au Shop | GoPro Camera | DVD's | Sunglasses | Surf Accessories
Works great.

Yeah I saw that one when shopping for mine, it's good but you need to have your hitch reciever on the car.

Try your local Bunnings. They should have a blank to suit. From memory a GM17 For a Holden should fit.
I don't remember what model disco the fella had when I cut one for him. If there's a decent key cutter on they should be able to find a suitable blank and cut the profile to suit.
I don't know about the GM17 key, but the mechanical key for the D4 is very different to any of the previous keys fitted to RRc and Disco1 etc.
It is a bar about 4mm x 2.5mm that is shaved to suit the tumblers of the lock about half way through on diagonally oposite corners. AFAIK, it will have to be a specialist locksmith and not just someone like Bunnings.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

There is a Company on the Gold Coast selling these, but you must tell them what vehicle you are putting it on. On the D4 you require a longer secure pin with an added cost. All up close to $100.00. No difference if purchasing direct from the manufacturer in the States, postage was over the top.
Whoops I read disco 2 the first time. Not sure where else to get one sorry.

Subscriberthanks for the replies guys, finally found a locksmith who could do it for me. the 2 issues are:
-finding the blank
-cutting the key - because you can't get the key out of the fob and it is at a 90 degree angle, it is hard to cut
i didn't want one of those surf padlocks
cheers

Que?
With the front of the fob facing you and the silver side at the top, slide the silver part to the left (same direction as the arrow on the top) about 3mm. Lift the silver part up, the mechanical emergency key will then slide out to the left, completely detaching from the fob.
At least that's what happens with my fob.
