    Lead Supplies

    Hi Guys.
I have invested in a Lee Lead Smelter for sinker production.
Already went round 1 making sinkers from wheel weights.Been there done that not going back
I have a stock of ingots from this process, the supply will dry up.
Can you actually buy lead ignots in Aussie,I was told yesterday you need a licsence to BUY lead,TRUE STORY?????
Anybody know of sources and $KG?????
I see there is some roofers lead on gumtree, around $2.50KG.
Next time Im at swapmeets I will grab divers lead, its normally cheap.

    Talking Show and Tell

During my travels, I have scored several pieces of lead from roofs, you know, mates fixing things etc, and actually scored a roll (not sure on length, but it weighs heaps) from one of my jobs I was at. So now I have some stock .
Can post up a pic of your purchase so I can have an eye full? I have wanted to do my own sinkers for ages now, but dont really have the equipment for it,, although I had a mate who just melted his in a saucepan on his camp stove.
Another mate had a little crucival to put on the fire when we went camping,, he used to make spoon sinkers.

    Chops

Oh,, almost forgot, you can buy lead from most hardware stores I think, I'm sure I've seen it at Bunnings too. Dont know about any licence though,, plumbers maybe?

Nothing wrong with wheel weights but your Lee pot is too small for them.
I use them for boolits but melt them in a big cast pot over a gas burner. This gives more room to skim off all the junk.
Lead I buy from the scrappies at $1 per kilo.

You live in a farming area. Scrounge linkage pins from tractors. They apparently make good sinkers. At least the mongrel fisherman on staff at one place I worked thought so. They used to steal the pins from the new tractors in the yard. Ended up removing them as stock came in and holding them in a security locker with the tool kits, jacks, wheel braces etc from the trucks.

Some time ago I managed to get some 30kg lead ingots (yacht ballast) from a metal recycler for $1 kg. Each ingot makes almost 200 No. 12 ball sinkers. I have tried wheel weights but they do not melt as good as the ingots due to the other impurities added to increase strength as well as the steel bits that attach to the rim. I use a gas burner and a small steel pot to melt it.

Find some local roofers and offer to buy their scrap off them from the flashing. They take it to recyclers anyway so as long as your in the ballpark $$$ wise.

Andy - I have a few old batteries

Seriously, if you find a metals recycler in Perth who can sell you some, I am happy to go and collect/buy it until you can drive up.

Bunnings sells rolls of lead flashing (I bought one for radiation shielding ) - but can't remember the price - will check next time.

There are probably only a couple of dozen houses where Andy lives. Not enough work for any roofers to be local.
