    Fitting a Tekonsha P2 to an 09 RRS TDV8

    Hi all,

I've just purchased a P2 and would greatly appreciate advice from those who have fitted this controller to their RRS.

Of course, I have the instructions that came with the unit but any advice or suggestions that might help me avoid any pitfalls would be very welcome, as would advice regarding the best routing paths of wiring through the vehicle.

I'll be towing a big van (tandem) fitted with LED lights.

    Thanks

    John ....

    G'day John,

Have a look through this post it will give you a good idea of the step by step installation procedures involved.

Use the search engine to your advantage as it is your friend, you should be able to find heaps of stuff on electric brake controllers and dealing with LED trailer lights.

Just a personal opinion but while the Prodigy P2 has a couple of extra functions, you may find that mounting it under the dash makes getting at the adjusting wheel on top a little more difficult and the display hard to see.

In the under dash RRS/D3/D4 situation the P3 seems to have more advantages.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I can understand that. For a big vehicle it is pretty tight in th ecabin and not a lot of space to discretely mount such items. That is compounded by the fact that I'm pretty tall and I can see my knees getting close to under dash paraphernalia.

I bought my P2 before I'd ever seen a controller in the flesh, but I suspect I might be able to change it over to a P3 if i pressed a bit.

    Thanks

Following on from Lotz-A-Landies, if you can exchange your P2 for a P3 without too much trouble IMO that would be good for the reasons stated.

I have a P3 mounted under dash in my D4 and find that it quite accessible. I am also tall and have not found it to cause a problem for my left knee mounted in that position. I am aware that some have preferred to mount theirs on the dash while others have opted for the Redarc remote mount controller.

    Thanks for that Lou.

I will check to see if exchange is possible, otherwise I might ebay it and then get a P3.

Did you have any issues installing/wiring the unit and did you require an LED interface for the trailer/van? Also did you consider the Redarc unit?

    Cheers

John, I did not have any real problems except for having to retrieve some of the clips form the tread plates that fell into the sill. As with anything, the first time is always the hardest however the step by step information was of great assistance. Even though the post is lengthy read through it as it will give you a better understanding of what others have encountered and what to do.

Tip - if any of the clips remain in the sills when you remove the tread plates take them out and fit them to the tread plates before trying to replace the tread plates, if not you will push them into the sill panels (and they are deep).

I have a combination of filament globes and LEDs on my van so did not fit the shunt. I have not had any problems with the reversing sensors or my turn indicators and the trailer symbol is displayed on the dash when the turn indicators are activated.

John I did consider the Redarc and did like it's small foot print but after researching the various types of controllers and their method of operating I chose the Prodigy 3.

    Hope that this helps.

John, I forgot to mention that if there are any specific differences in wiring in a brake controller in a RRS TDV8 to a 3ltr D4 I am sure that someone will comment and make you aware.

    Lou,

Thank you both posts. It is all a matter of some knowledge and the confidence it generates to move forward. I am finding members of the AULRO community generous with the sharing of knowledge, expertise, and their time.

You are right, I feel fairly confident someone with specific RRS experience will also comment.

Thanks again for your valuable comments.

    Cheers

John you mention it is an 09my can you clarify by specifying the last 8 digits of the VIN please as the post for the instructions may be incorrect.

The wiring architecture is the same for the D3/Sport up until end 09MY &
D4/Sport changes & uses a slightly different style

    Cheers
