I'm in the process of (slowly) doing up my 130, and each and every time I do something my ideas change, particularly when it comes to the dual battery system and the use of the tool box under the rear seat.

My initial plan was to have both batteries under the passenger seat, with all electrics running to an (Mulgo) ex-box. The batteries will be running a winch, a series of lights, and a fridge when I don't take the Kimberly. Then under the passenger seat I was going to have the compressor, and use the tool for its intended purpose.

However after speaking with an auto-electrician, I have been given the impression that dual batteries will not fit under one seat and as such I will have to use both.

I know it will probably only add to my frustration, but hows about some ideas, and even photos so I can get my head around this thing!

Also, can somebody tell me what these are actually for and if they serve any actual purpose. They come from behind the fold down 60/40 seats and sit near the top on either side. I've pulled them out and given them a touch up, but am considering leaving them out if they are not really required. My only impression is that they are there to stop the seats from going forward inadvertently. However there is nothing really there to achieve this?

Have a look at the photos and tell me what you reckon! Don't forget I am chasing ideas on the dual batteries, seat boxes and tool box.

Hi mate, I have a td5 130 and have dual batts under the pas side seat with the solenoid in there as well. I made my own center aluminium box like the mulgo box. I have the ECU in there and the fuse box as well. Under the drivers side seat is now my air compressor and aux fuses I have fitted for lights and stuff.

The batts are N70 size and I have fitted them to several defenders now.

Theres tons of pics and whatnot on here of dual batts under the pax seat in a defer. I just did the searching last week as I'm about to do that mod.

You can even buy and aftermarket batt clamp for the exact purpose (OL maybe?).

I didn't use any batt trays just put them in there and use batt hold down clamps to secure.

I, like Lambrover, have 2 N70 sized batteries under the passenger seat. Pic attached before i wired it up. The dual battery solenoid is mounted to the rear of the battery box.

I built a platform from hardwood to level off the floor of the battery box and rotated the 2 batteries 90 deg. The battery to the front of the box needs to be moved up under the lip of the box for it to fit. I used the original brace inverted and drilled new holes. I had to grind off some of the brace to avoid contact with the box lid. There is minimal room from the terminal to the box lid. I put a piece of rubber between the top of batteries and lid to avoid contact. My aux batt is 100 Ah so there is no need to compromise.

Those brackets are indeed to stop the seats folding forward and I think I read somewhere, perhaps on here, that they are an ADR requirement that were not fitted in the uk. Mine are missing and the storage space behind the seat is welcome. I've seen posts were others have fitted overcentre latches to achieve the best of both worlds.

You'll get two batteries under the passenger seat with a little bit of imagination. Your auto electrician wants to take the easy route. I made up a steel battery holder to take two batteries on my old Td5 110. I had an electronic isolator in there as well. Those brackets holding the seat back are usually the first thing to come out. You won't see them on too many older 130s.

Your battery box is without doubt the prettiest looking set-up I've seen. I even took a photo of it if you remember! Unfortunately, I've misplaced it, and would appreciate it if you could upload one just for me to ogle
