Strange Spinning Noise when engine running and just after stop

Morning All... Quick question here bit baffled.

Start up Freelander (2008 Td4) and strange grinding/spinning noise (something noisy turning) can be heard under engine noise. It continues when engine has stopped and then stops but then spins back up for 10 seconds or so before cutting out.

I have narrowed down that its not the fans but could be coming from the starter motor? Any one experienced anything similar before?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Curious...

Initial thought was turbo but then you say that it spins up again once the engine has stopped. From your description, it sounds like a cooling fan but you'd be able to see those by the radiators.

* Power steering pump (I think it's electrical on the FL2)?
* Is there an emissions control system fitted? e.g. The D2 has a unit which pumps air into the exhaust manifold to help with the emissions.

What you can do is get a length of hose and use it like a stethoscope to help trace where the noise is coming from.

I initially though oil centrifuge filter. Only problem is that I don't know if a F2 has one like the D2 diesel the other thing is it does not stop and then start up again after you have stopped the engine. Centrifuge will change pitch when it starts up and then when it slows down after the engine has stopped. It maybe that you don't hear it until the pitch changes?

I had to get the power steering fluid flushed and redone as it was making a strange noise. I thought the pump had gone.

So I have established where the noise is coming from.

See attached picture - I believe its the throttle assembly body. The spinning is coming from withinside the circled box.

When its pushed you can change the tone of the spinning so its definetely here. Anyone encountered this issue before or can explain the timing of the spinning i.e. why it would spin up when foot is put on the brake to start car and also when car is shut down?

I have a new one on order from the UK...in anticipation of this being the issue. As always much cheaper than from Australia 1/4 of the cost!

I can't explain the timing of the spinning but I do know that the Freelander 2 does some clever stuff with the air-flows to make the burn in the combustion chamber more efficient.

Dunno... Maybe it's part of that???

Come to think of it, there is a noise coming from under the bonnet like a buzz for a while after the motor is shut off. Mine has always done it and I just ignore it. I figured it was supposed to happen. Hasn't caused a problem in 4 years and 142,000 kms

Appreciate that - I think mine used to as well. This isn't just a buzzing though this is a bad noise! Certainly doesn't sound healthy. New throttle body arriving next week - will let you know how it goes when it gets fitted. Talking to a number of people they believe this is the first time for this to happen to a FR2 in Australia from their experience. It has however happened in the uk a few times from what I can see - mainly after a stationary emissions check in the mot where the mechanic sits on the spot and revs the crap out of it!

This has just happened to me, how was this resolved in the end and what part is it?

I cannot see from the photo but usually on EFI engines the IAC valve will cycle when the engine is turned off to prevent it being seized by carbon.
If it has a Bosch valve like a D2, then it is a sleeve type valve and rotates to open and close.
Even an old RRC does that.
