Strange Buzz/rattle from gear selector lever

Had a check through the forum but couldn't find anything similar...

Have 2009 PUMA just out of warranty that developed a noise a while back when towing or under load (especially) uphill. Makes a buzz/rattle that has progressively become louder in 4th and 6th. The noise is at the base of the lever and stops when I press against the rubber shield (see video attached).

Talked to dealer over time but they cannot replicate, probably because the car is unladen at servicetime - I think something is loose or worn as indicative of it getting louder. Before I start pulling things apart to investigate myself, thought I'd put it out there for the 'experts'. Any ideas on the cause?? Feedback appreciated!!

While I'm at it, what are opinions on adding teflon products to gearbox/transfercase/differentials??

Without knowing that gearbox, my initial guess would be bias springs/plate, if fitted...

Somebody more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

Ha ha - mine did exactly the same thing - they changed the gear stick under warranty.

Pretty sure it's just a rattle between the steel inner shaft and the plastic outer - I was going to squirt a little silastic up there but finally manged to teach LR how to replicate the noise so they could replace it under warranty - they're bloody hopeless that mob.

Don't worry about it too much - mine did it for 15,000kms and never fell apart.

PS I made a vid almost exactly the same as yours as I listened to the bloody thing rattle for five days straight on the drive to WA...

Sent you a PM, but out of curiosity...how did you get them to replicate the noise? Maybe good for those that follow...

mine still does is and has never been resolved...

I had suggested the gear lever a number of times to be just be told its not that.

ours is easy to replicate just put the car under load on a hill I.e put it in a higher gear than it needs to be and labour it.

Seems to be a common problem. Mines afflicted, just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.

    Have a look here - Defender2 - View topic - Rattling gear knob . . . .

oh trust me I believe you but its convincing the people that pay the bills that I was probably right..

what I could actually do with is borrowing one of someone and trying it..
