Advice on selling a PUMA

I'm looking to sell my MY09 PUMA to sponsor the purchase of a new PUMA. I've not sold an "expensive" landrover before. I'm thinking about selling via carsales.com but wondered how to handle the payment. Any advice? Do you demand cash - or a bank check - do you wait for the check to clear. Any traps in this process?

Beware of the scammers via carsales.com - plenty of offers will come from people who are away at sea or on an oil rig - ignore them! Being aware of this (and the volume of them is annoying and frustrating!!) any on line method gets you to a wide audience. If it were me I would want a bank cheque at hand over (no need for it to clear as the bank would'nt issue one without the funds being there). By all means accept a deposit from a serious buyer, preferably by either cash in hand or direct deposit into your account. I have bought via ebay by this method with no dramas - direct deposit then bank cheque on pick up. Good luck!!

if you want to avoid the bank cheque and the buyer wants to avoid the bank charges then direct deposit is the way to go...

the buyer can dd on the spot and you can confirm it (at the point of purchase) if you each have mobile banking at the same bank

with a major $s sale like that I would expect a prior deposit by dd unless there are special circumstances

I've sold two cars via Carsales personally, helped dad sell a heap more (he just loves computers!!), never had a scammer but they are out there!!

Clean the car up, the first impression is often the one that will make a buyer decide to look further or run away, so make it as tidy as can be, little things like painting the towbar with a rattle can so it looks new etc, tire shine, polish it, and most important a clean interior.

I never accept cash, this is dads advice being a carsalesman of 30 odd years, either bank cheque or direct transfer, my 80 series was a bank cheque, my D1 was a direct transfer (sight unseen!!!)

Just make sure the buyer is genuine, get the money before they get the car, blah blah blah.

most bank cheques have no more security than a normal cheque

most computer wholesalers will not clear a dd payment until they take it out of the landing account and move it into another because it can be pulled back out quickly i am told...

i don't know how unfortunetly

me. i would be up for cleared funds or cash and a quick drive to the bank

This is the scenario put to a 17 year old me, when selling the 80 series i bought to make money out of.

"Never accept cash because the moment you sign the paperwork (i.e. rego and receipt) and they drive off with the vehicle which is now theirs, you have a pile of cash, all you need is someone dodgy that knows whats going on (could even be the buyers mate), to be waiting around the corner ready to thump you one and take the cash, they now have the cash and a vehicle to their name which you can do nothing about, cash is not traceable like a bank cheque or transfer"

That's dads personal preference along with a direct transfer, and he's done it hundreds of times!!

Make sure you get them to sign off on the ergo transfer ( time stamp), I had one idiot who kept a bike registered in my name for 6 months. Not good if you live in Melbourne with all the tolls and cameras. I took a cash deposit of $1000 on my Patrol and then I went and got a roadworthy and delivered it after he transferred the remainder. I knew that there would be a few things on the roadworthy, like a new windscreen, the $1000 covered this. I think in QLD you must have a roadworthy before advertising.

I've sold 4 items on carsales.com without problems. I Disco - bank cheque, 2Defender 1 cash and 1 DD. Boat - DD.
Camper trailer - cash.
The idea of thugs coming round to thump you and get the money back seems a bit far fetched, I took mine direct to the bank. Bank cheque for Disco was fast processed before paperwork signed.
I forgot, it's 5 items as I've just sold the Prado there as well via DD in 4 lots as their account wouldn't allow a single payment. Again no problems at all.
Very few scammers but a few dickheads who didn't want to show their licence as according to them "I had no right to take details"!!!
And they didn't get a ride either.
