Service... Or lack of...?

So my rig hit a snag... Suspension fault and normal height only, and after a week waiting for my service day today it hit its bump stops. so I know that the compressor was functioning well until this time. Never overheated, never slow. Now "dead". Took in for service this morning and listed a few things I wanted assessed for their opinion.

Get a call extremely late in the day to say the relay and compressor needs replacing for it to work. Now, I ain't too knowledgeable about mechanics etc but I read/research and learn as much as possible about things before asking questions so I can gauge BS when I hear it. Now if I am told the relay is required and a compressor, you would think to reach this position they would have tested a new relay yeah?

If so, and it worked, then $30 and I am back in business right? Well I wasn't told that this had been tested, and I understand they didn't do work I didn't authorise but surely this is how you do a process of elimination? From a customer point of view I am not impressed.

I also asked about knotchy or rough steering which occurred for a few weeks, but cleared up after a while. I have read this sharp banging, and knotchy steering can be caused by the lower steering rack, the hopped in the car turned the wheel and couldn't feel anything so it's fine. WTF?!!! Surely you can take the covers off and have a look and see if poor wear is occurring and may be the cause? Seriously why did I ask, I pay so I don't have to do the work myself!

So I am after some advice about these reasonably simple things and whether or not it is unreasonable? I tried Ritter for my first service and they didn't even notice a blown tail light. Is there any hope? I know it's still blown (lazy I know but if they replace it this time at least they did the check they have in the log books).

At this stage I am not preceding with the repair until I have replaced the Relay and tested it myself. Is this foolish? Anyone got a part number and also maybe info on the location of it?

OK,

I understand your point of view. Yes it can be frustrating.

Now from my side, when you work on these things everyday, you get to learn how things fail & there cause.
The reason for changing the compressor, relay & fuse? Is because the compressor fails internally, fuse blows because the circuit gets hot, a relay getting hot means its life span has just decreased by X (how long is X you ask?) I can't tell you! I don't know, would you rather spend $30 on a part now. Rather than having to come back the next day to then have it replaced?

Hopefully the service advisor has explained that to you.

Nah no explanation like that given. But is it not worth trying the relay first?

If the compressor has failed, & I take it has by your description, then replacing the relay would do nothing as the compressor is still kaput!
Replace compressor to rectify suspension & relay as a precaution.

correct, a common set of circumstances for a d3, and unfortunately in 60 to 80,000km may happen again.

How do they fail internally without any signs of weakness? As I can see and from the normal failures I have read and heard if they over heat and slow when pumping up. I didn't have this, so is it common this way?

Historically over-work...as in cycling too often....mainly access to offroad, can bring on problems. There have also been cases of too much dissicant in the drier restricting airflow. I believe that is an easy fix.

However, LR have just started replacing compressors and all the attached electrical bits on the D4s. Mine got replaced last week. AMK is the new brand.

Would this be the case with mine - as in getting the new version/supplier compressor and wiring or would I get the old ones if it were done at your dealership?

There are not many Hitachi compressors left, if you wish to have the AMK version then would be best to ask for it.
