My iphone 4 has Tom Tom on it and that is not Internet based but GPS based plus I have a GPS app which turns the phone into a full GPS

Rather than start a new thread - what about Android??

I know I can put Oziexplorer on it and will do in due course but what about street Turn by Turn that uses its own maps and not Google maps via the network.

I have no data plan with my Android.

I downloaded MetroView ($11) for navigation within Oz with my iPhone 3GS. Updates are free. No data plan required.

Depends on your phone as to what it has.
I used the Telstra/Garmin Navigator on my last phone. It required data but it was free if you used Telstra as your carrier. Although if you have no data plan you would have to be very careful turning on the mobile data as other background stuff might decide to use it too.
Telstra charges for the app on a monthly basis but if you are using prepaid then it comed out of your funny money so essentially it is free.

Now I have a Samsung phone it came with its own offline navigation software which works very well but its search function relies on POI whereas Telstra's had access to yellow pages etc.

No doubt there are offline versions you can pay for but I have only used these two.

I have a Motorola Defy - I am with Optus and have no data and can only download via Wifi at home or at Maccas. The plan cannot be used to even accidentally download.

i am looking for a standalone system as suggested by Ron above.

I doubt there is a smart phone out there these days that doesn't have a built in GPS.
I am guessing Android and Windoze phones are the same as Iphones/Ipads. Where the GPS chip is actually part of the Cellular chip (and has been for atleast 3yrs).
So you cant actually buy an iphone without GPS.

Also with all the smart phones with GPS that I have used. They DO not need a cellular or WIFI connection to work. So an iPhone in the simpson desert will work just fine. In fact even in the Vic High country my Phone 3,4 & 5 have had no issue with GPS signal in the deepest valley.
Where they say Assisted GPS in the brochure. It means that while the GPS is finding the satellites. It will use the known location of Wireless connections or Cellular towers to give you a rough idea of where it is.
An example of this is on the iPhone when you open maps and it shows your position as a big circle with the blue dot in the middle. This is using a bit of a guess using outside information. Then once the GPS kicks in, you only get the blue dot. As your position is now precise.

Check out MotionX-GPS for iphone and ipad. Free version available and paid up version at around $20 that enables you to share to facebook, etc. I reckon its great; bounces off phone towers or if they're not available it bounces off satellites, does gradients, distances, total rise and fall, share to google earth to view in 3D.
