Chassis Number R06101688

vehicle R06101688 was despatched 'In' 13/09/1949 and despatched 'out' on 11/10/1949 to Annand and Thompson, Newstead, Brisbane.

It was in a batch of 44 vehicles and just before the CKD stage so all were assembled in England, including yours apart from, R06101685 and R06101686 which were CKD's and obviously some sort of trial pair as CKD's were away usually in lots of 6. So it would have been dark green, no doubt about that.

conflicted to be frank...

i like the lived in look but would love to do a nice restore

the front guards need a fair bit of love

the firewall needs love but not major amounts, under the screen, but i reckon i will be able to fold up a replacement in zincalume all going well. and a bit on the drivers side next to the pillar. have a spare one that will be good for bits and pieces.

the brakes i imagine will need heaps of love.

no idea about the drive train other than it is still all there in one piece bar the ring pull bits and was driven into the garage a few years ago.

the donk is a 2 ltr... it ran well when driven into his garage..

not sure what my chances of picking up a correct 1949 1.6ltr would be but i imagine it would cost a bit more than the car itself is costing.

but the motor would suit the 55 i have that has a 2 1/4 ltr in it hmmmm

once i get it all here and laid out and the heat from the better half subsides i will try to make an informed decision..

Glad that the old 80" has found a good home and not being parted out .
Also its a 1950 landy not a 1949 even though it is date stamped 1949.
All 80" Land Rovers that start with chassis prefix 061 are 1950 models.

It's the chassis build number, later they put the official chassis number on following it. Sometimes they are very faint, others very well stamped, usually within a couple of hundred like most other major components - engine, gearbox, front and rear axle casings. I will have a look at my two 1949 chassis in the morning and post up their build and chassis numbers.

Hi, my 1950 80 " which is date stamped 10/49 has a chassis number
0610 3798 it also had the 4 digits befors the chassis no, this number being 4237. I always beleaved it to be a number A&t stamped on as they are only half the height of the chassis number. i have a friend who was service manager of A&T at the time i will ask him if he can shed any light on the numbers . I sold a 49 steering wheel to Jim Pearl about 2 years ago I think he may still have it & I exchanged a 48 grill for a capstan winch a few years back. The 80 looks great wish mine had been as good when I bought it off keith 25 Years ago. Wayne

Here are the numbers:

Chassis Number R8664773 - It was made as a silver chassis that has been overpainted with light green so it is one of the earliest light green chassis. It is the 1772nd 1949 production vehicle as they started at R8663001. It has the build number in smaller numbers - 4785. Above the numerals 78 is a small circular stamp with something unreadable inside it - it's about a 1/4"in diameter. Quite likely the maufacturer or the fabricator?? This chassis is just the same as a late 1948 chassis - ie no reinforcing between the upper and lower sections of the rear outriggers, etc. Probably made March 1949.

Chassis Number R8667213 (a dark green chassis - some 4000 into 1949 production vehicles) also has the build number in smaller numbers - 7562 and the chassis number R and the 8 are stamped over the last three numerals of the build number. It would have been made in late June 1949.

When I can I will have a look at a couple of others.
