Mounting Tekonsha P3 control unit in RRS

I have a RRS MY12 and will shortly take delivery of an off-road caravan. I am starting on the jobs of fitting an electric brake controller and a dual battery system to the car. The threads by sniegy and others on fitting an electric brake controller seem quite comprehensive (I will know for sure when I start working on it).

I have purchased a Tekonsha P3 controller for the job. The first thing I want to sort is the mounting of the brake controller. Some posts cover mounting the Tekonsha unit near the left knee, but having previously injured my knee on a brake controller mounted in that position, I hope to mount the unit elsewhere.

A spot that looks good is above the dashboard to the right of the instrument binnacle, so that it sits nice and high and so the display will be easy to see and the various switches will be easy to reach and operate. The unit appears to fit there very comfortably and could look very neat. BUT, there is a small grill in that spot with an AIR BAG sign on it. Finding information on the air bags isn't easy, but the manual at Air bags - Occupant safetyl doesn't show an air bag mounted at that position.

Can anyone advise me if the brake controller unit can be mounted in that position safely?

I would be grateful for any hints on how I might mount the unit without drilling holes in the top of the dash.

Also any clues on removing and replacing trim panels in that area?

If we are talking about the inside of the A pillar then yes there is a side impact air bag there. Don't put anything in front of it.

Spent hours trying out different positions and settled on the spot at the top of the pull down panel and just in front of the left knee , had to drill 2 small holes for the screws but could not find any other place for it that was usable , and just tucked the wires around the side of the pull down panel and all was well . P3 brake controller on a RR Sport

I removed the knee panel under the wheel, made up a bracket screwed to the inside of the panel on the right hand side that emerges between that panel and the lower dash panel. Plenty of room on the right hand side, still quite reachable and NO screws through the trim. I saw this location in an American link although the bracket there was screwed through the trim.

My Sport is a 2005. The P3 causes feedback when wired correctly in some circumstances, eg, ignition off, brake pedal depressed and manual control on the P3 activated - lights up the whole dash. Auto electricians deny this happens and LR dealers are not sure. A diode is needed on the trigger (red ) wire to the P3 as identified by Sniegy.
