Rear Wheel Carriers

Hi All,

I have been looking at RWC's for my D4 and am considering the Kaymar dual wheel carrier. I know 4x4 Design and Engineering also make a dual carrier but have been unable to contact them to get details. Their website is 'under construction' ATM. Can anyone assist with comparative information on these carriers or even a telephone number for 4x4 Design and Engineering?

Do you really need a dual rear wheel carrier? I have a single one and its fine but it does make getting into the back of the car a little more of a pain, two would be doubly so and 90% of the time you are probably in the city and have no need for it. The Kaymar bars are also incredibly expensive.

I have one on the rear because of my long range tank and put a second spare on the roof rack if going on a trip.

A mate of mine has a twin wheel carrier and he removes the passenger carrier when at home and fits the second one when touring

There is also the Dolium variant which from memory Opposite Lock distributes

I have an Outback Accessories single rear wheel carrier from Opposite Lock that I am quite happy with. It has a gas strut that keepers it in the open position even on slopes.

Mine's the same - but I'm not sure if it's an Outback Accessories or a Dolium. Was supplied & fitted by Lifestyle 4WD in Perth. The gas strut works extremely well and is a brilliant addition. Last one that I had could be annoying to say the least.

Whichever one you do end up choosing, consider one particular item of design...

EASE of opening (& closing)..

I have always used Kaymar rear bars, but unless they offer in future a different locking option, my current will be my last.

I have a dual carrier, and have really started to find it a real pain. I don't mind having to open the carriers to get in the back, but bloody hell, they get damn hard to close & lock when your tired. Most of the time actually I end up using my booted feet to lock close the buggers.

You would think in this modern age, a nice easy locking system would be available !!

We have the Dolium rear wheel carrier, it does stay open even on a sideways lean and so far had no issues with not staying looked open.

Easy to open and close and doesn't weigh a ton like the Kaymar rear bar does.

Apart from that it looks neat and tidy and well engineered unlike some rear wheel carriers.

On the odd occasion I might feel I need to have a second wheel with us, which so far I have not, I would simply get a roof rack and put the second spare wheel up there. Mind you for those that may not be of my physical size lifting a wheel and tyre off of a roof rack could be difficult.
