why not just buy an automatic 4x4.... probably work out cheaper...
Hi all,
I would like to draw upon members experiences, knowledge and ideas in relation to my question on converting a defender into an auto.
My problem is that I have no idea which model to buy to make this a success. Any advice/experiences/insight/websites to look at etc would be awesome.
Thanks in advance.

300tdi or td5
thanks for the replies so far. I really like to the look and the history of the defender. It is certainly an iconic vehicle. We are a one car family and the misses can't drive the manual, would be much easier if she could. lol

But wouldn't it be easier (and cheaper) for her to get a manual licence?![]()
Buy a 300tdi 110 and drop in the zf4hp22 from the equivalent disco, very easy one day job[ive done it and well worth it!]
It really depends on your budget.
You can convert most of them to auto however the older ones will be cheaper to convert due to the availability & compatibility of second hand parts & the fact that most of the older defenders had the same engine combinations as the discos.
The new Pumas can be converted using an Ashcroft conversion kit that whilst expensive comes with a new engine ECU that gives you more power.
This conversion has been reviewed by Landrover Owners magazine and was given a great review. (should be a OEM option).
Cheers
