the optional indicators

After long considerations decided to go for the NOS (New Old Stock) indicators. They were optionals at the time. So where to place them. Looking back at photos of the 50's I see both horizontal and vertical placement. Horizontal mostly if the typical UK square numberplate was right underneath on the wing. Vertical often for army and abroad. As the parking lights have the special extruding fittings it would be visual less attractive to not have it for the indicators if horizontal, thus I went for vertical.

And with he right bulb they are pretty bright.

I know how painful it is to modify but as you said it is/ was a logical mod and compulsory one at that so making it authentic as you have is a good choice.

Are you up for the Snow trip with the LROCV IN Aug? It is kid friendly and a must. Jamison to Licola. Leafers with a traditionally good show up.

A good investment for your own safety, but I'm not sure about compulsory.

My Series 1 already had holes cut in the panels and indicators mounted otherwise I would have mounted them on brackets using existing holes in the crossmember/bumper.

Not compulsory in Victoria , but comp safety wize. , when I looked at it my part book puts them side by side ( front) rather than vertically .... Still looks great and the horizontal set up requires a lill panel beating

the english put them sideways with the blinker being outermost

in australia they are vertical and the adr's say the blinker should be at the top i thought... but that may only relate to new vehicle fitment.

Current regulation on where lights and indicators are to be fitted are not applicable to series 1s. As the Series ones are pre-law and regulation.

Otherwise we would need to remove the main lamps onto the wings, install seatbelts, clean engines, and.....
(you may notice some UK series 2 and 3s with extra main lamps in their wings, poor guys)

Luckily... (most of) these laws and regulations do not apply to Series one's otherwise we would all be driving in very old Defenders.

English doing them sideways... sounds logical, but I looked up lots of old photos and noticed that it is only "most", and I suspect that due to the square license plate and lack of space. I don't think there was a law or rule at the time regarding the positioning, otherwise they would surely be all like that.

I spend a lot of time driving in the Eastern suburbs, most people do not see indicating as compulsory.....

I know what you mean, and slow traffic keeping left, or using a round-about correctly... That is why I want to keep my hands on the wheel rather than waving around, so indicators are well worth the expense and trauma to the body.
