D4 2.7 fuel useage Simpson desert

Anyone been across west to east recently in a D4 2.7?
If so how much fuel did you use between Mt Dare and Birdsville,using the French and QA lines,approx 550K.
We will not be towing but will have gear on the roof and loaded.

The D2a did it on around 80l but i am sure the D4 will use more.

So i am thinking around 120l at least to be sure.That is around i full tank and two jerrys,mine take 22l each.Remembering the tank has a usable of around 76l,and leaving extra in case we have to detour,or whatever.

Or do i take three jerrys to be sure.....

i spoke to david at william creek (aulro member and pub manager) iirc he used about 75ltr driving direct french line, that was leave saturday birdsville arrive sunday evening mt dare for dinner.
i would doubt e/w w/e would make much difference, take two jerrys.

I did East - West via the Rig Rd and averaged 18ltrs / 100k.
Main tank got me most of the way, switched over to the L/R tank coming into Dalhousie. It's 70 k between them so 1 jerry would do it, 2 to be safe.

I did east to west in my 2.7 and I'm pretty sure I used full main tank and 2 and a half jerry cans. I had less than a quarter tank when I arrived at Mt Dare.
Llams or rods are essential for this trip in my opinion.

Hi Scarry

We are doing the Simpson next month in the same model as you so I’ve been watching your post with interest to get some level of comfort on how much fuel to take.

The basic steps for me are:

1. The distance of the (mixed) route we plan to travel: 570km plus 50km for diversions so say 630km, Mt Dare to Birdsville.

2. Expected fuel consumption: Yorkie’s post has Mt Dare Dave using 75L to do 437km, so that’s 17L/100km. Rich got 18L/100km. So with this info and what I’ve been getting in sand I’m thinking 18L/100km is about right.

3. How much fuel do I need? Easy, 630km at 18L/100km = 144L.

4. How much extra do I carry to = 144L? My problem here is how much fuel is really available from the main tank. The Tech Spec says that there is a usable 82 litres but when I’ve filled up at “0 km to go” the bowser says only 70 litres has gone in.

Question for the group, can I safely assume that there is still a useable 12 litres in the tank?

If there is I could get away with 2 jerry cans which will go on the roof. But, if not, I’ll need to take 3 to be safe and the 3rd would need to go in the car so I don’t go over the roof load limit (Oztent + awning + gas bottle up there as well)

Dare I also ask what is people’s real gut opinion of putting 95kg on the roof for the first 110km out of Mt Dare

Close....but 114L.

I find 18L quite high from my heavy sand experience (CSR), but would be best to base it on 18l per 100, which is what I did, so had plenty of fuel left.

I am numerically lexdysic as well so you are in good company.

But using a calculator and triple checking the outcomes based on the info provided, even if you increased your assumed fuel usage to 20lt/100km for a 630 km trip then a full tank plus 2 x 22 lt jerries will give you 126 lt of fuel, exactly the same amount as the usage.

You might need to push the last few feet but I recon you will be fine.

Two Jerry's will be plenty. I carried 3 on my roof from Mt Dare, Old Andado, The Twins, Madagan line across to the Colson track, into the Geographic centre back out and into Birdsville and still had just less than 1/2 tank left.
I did have the long range tank though.

I had two Jerry's vertical inside my spare tyre up on the roof and the other one also vertical up there as well.

I crossed the simpson East to West in the D3 and used 100L between birdsville and Oodnadatta. I took 100l in jerries on the roof but didn't need it.

Taking the extra allowed me to cut out filling up at Mt Dare where I heard the roads between Dalhousie & Mt Dare were in shocking condition.
