Cruise Control for Td5 Defender

Hi

I am in Sydney for a week and would love to have a cruise control fitted to my 2002 td5. Thought that it would make my return trip home a bit easier.
If anyone has any suggestions on where I could have one fitted in Sydney I'd be wrapped.

Not sure where to fit a unit but if the ECU has a NNN prefix on it serial number then you can simply wire in some switches/buttons (3x) to connect to some existing wires. A quick search will show you which ones. The MSB serial numbered ECUs are not capable of this though

I will check it out. When it comes to electrical stuff I leave it to the experts rather than get 500kms down the road before all of my wiring burns out. I'm hopeless with electrical things. Now I know what book I should ask for next fathers day.

Nemo, if you have a NNN ECU and do it yourself its going to cost you about $10 for wire and switches, if you get it done professionally your looking at about $1000 .

On my three previous used cars Ive had to redo the 'professional' auto elec work, The cruise control that was fitted in my Td5 was one of those $1000 ones ( reciept from previous owner) , it was so badly fitted that I had to redo it myself, along with most of the other accessory wiring.

I doubt you could do much worse yourself.

and honestly Cruise is nice, but def not worth that much money !

Yeah, it's easy to do on a td5. I seem to recall posting a wiring dish some months/years ago. I know Mools also did a good write up.

A quick search on this forum should soon see you right.

You basically need an ON/OFF switch and 2 x Momentry switches (or 1 x rocker switch that is Momentry) and a few meters of wire.

The functionality is already enabled in the ecu so you just need to connect the switches. It will take you longer to make the switches look neat and route the wires than it will to make it work!!!

Terrafirma have 2 kits bout $400ish - one with two buttons or one with a stalk that is meant to look like factory

Seems easy enough to wire up as well

yes, thats also how easy it is to wire up the $10.00 setup.

I'll happily come to your place whilst on tour and install y'all a $10.00 kit for $400 saving you $600 on getting it done by an auto leccie

I'm no good with electrics either ... after a while on the pedal, your foot goes numb and you feel no pain!

If all else fails, it's nothing a correctly weighted brick can't sort out ... on second thoughts, get cruise control!

I am no good with sparks either but found doing this pretty easy, more than 10 bucks as I used genuine switches ( not cruise control ones) it looks pretty factory as I used existing blanks and suitable switches.

My defender has no leccie windows so I used a freelander rear window switch for the set/res and a heated seat switch as the on/off. I now just need to get them engraved so they light up with the correct symbols.

Be warned it does no good for fuel economy, is not very subtle/sophisticated and I certainly have to learn when it is/is not appropriate to use it. Cries of "are you still using @&$!ing cruise control" from my wife have become common as we maintain speed considered to be excessive through bends!

I used a cruise switch off a Disco 1 my mate gave me, mounts on the steering column it looks factory total cost £2 for the ECU pins and wire.
