    Discovery 3 Tyres - Cooper AT3

I currently have continental cross contact AT's on my D3 (265/60R18) and after a great weekend at the W4 Challenge I now need to replace with discovering 2 are past the legal tread and taking a big chunk out of one on Some rocks last sat.

After looking around I have decided on the Cooper AT3 (265/65R18) which seem like a decent AT tyre. Any comments on this one? I have seen a few posts but nothing really recent on this one. I would have like to have gone for a more aggressive 275 but worried about rubbing in lower than access mode. I have a LLAMS fitted and use this to go lower than access to fit in my underground car park so it's a compromise. Has anyone tried this out with a larger tyre? My low access mode is not far from the stops so does not give me much wiggle room.

Any comments would be great on the AT3 or the size.

How did you find sleeping on your roof topper on the wet, windy and wild Saturday night ?

I saw 3 or so marquees destroyed.

I have slept in my roof topper in heavy wind in the past, but its more of the regular design you see around and she really felt it.

    Was a great weekend.

at3 are good if you don't go to rough, make sure you buy LT version though.

with my 265s ST Mxx I can go down to LLAMS green but not further without rubbing

Rooftop tent was no problem. It's quite a rigid design so was just moving with the car rather than blowing around. I did get woken up when the rain started coming through the open window so quickly closed that :-).

Steve223. Looks like the LT version are only in the larger sizes. But seems a pretty good rated spec and closer to LT than normal rated tyres.

If you're sticking to 18" tyres and really want LT construction, then the only choices that will fit are the Bridgestone D697 LT265/60R18 or the BFG AT LT265/65R18. The BFG's will only fit in the spare wheel well if deflated, and fitting the LR tow-hitch can be problematic (read - "requires large mallet"!). They'll probably rub at lower than std access height.

The Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/60R18 isn't technically an LT, but it's very strong. Same fitting issues as the BFG though.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

Bridgestone D697 is also available as 285/60R18 LT. This is what I have on my D4.

Yes, but you have the Compomotive rims

On the std LR rims, there is a danger of the tyre scrubbing on the front upper control arm.

Oops - just noticed the OP has a D3, not D4. I think 285's will clear in that case.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Gordon and Bob,

I looked at the Bridgestone and considered them but $100 extra per tyre over the coopers. I think the real answer is move out of the apartment to a house where I have no height restrictions :-). The BFG look good but suspect they will rub when I go lower than access.

Heading up to Francois Perron tomorrow evening so will get the coopers sorted.

    Rich.

the most problems your read about Coopers are usually the non LT versions so personally would not buy a non LT especially after my LT sidewalls taking a flogging and already showing the white layer everywhere
