Hi Guys,

Old subject - different engines for a '69 S2a SWB. Was thinking of a 161 or 179 Holden engine. Can you still get the bits for this and where?. Are there any better options. Like Toyo etc.

My 2.25 is still reasonable - just planning for the eventual!

I'm running a 173, and that goes well, parts are cheap and easy to find. The only problem I have is that the conversion plate seems to leak transmission oil a little, haven't had a close look why yet, might be the wrong conversion plate.

I'd recomend a red enging over a toyo one, simple and reliable. The only tradeoff is that off road the power is at higher RPM, whereas i'd prefer it to be lower down.

Overdrive or HSTC is a good idea though. Mightn't bee needed on a SWB though.

or put a diesel in it

unless you dont use it offroad

then a red motor and an overdrive is a valid setup

Instead of going the holden 6 direction I would look at a Jap(swear swear swear) turbo intercooled 4cyl/5 speed and transfercase,and you only need to match tailshaft to diffs.They have heaps more go than the holden 6 and all the transmission/motor will match and be happy!!!!.
I'm the first to bag my mitsi trytoo 2.5 TDI,but the last 3 to 4 weeks I have been carting 1 tonne loads of timber on a 500kg trailer and the tourque on hills is really impressive,only having to change down to 4th on the steepest hills between Armadale and Williams(80kph all the way up bedfordale hill for you WA guys).I know my 109 202 powered Ser 3 would struggle with the same load.

I used to hate that bedfordale hill when I lived in the city, had a Hilux 2.4l desiel.

A long and lateral shot and perhaps an expensive option...but has any one put a LR 200 or 300 Tdi engine in a Series.

I like the idea as it has some purist overtones. 8)

The Tdi has some great virtues included among these great hill climbing at speed... ask me about the climb eastward up the Mt Tomar section of the Bells Line of Road. Three litre Tdi Jackaroos and 16v Pugeots watch out and keep left unless overtaking.

And 9.4 litres/100km the last trip.
