Brake pad wear on Puma 90

Took the 90 in for it's 20000km service last week. most of the report was good but what did set off alarm bells in my mind was that the rear brake pads are apparently worn to 50%! Fronts are at 90% remaining.

Anyone experienced this? Comments please!

Do you drive on dirt roads?

When I drive on dirt, my rear pads squeal, which I assume is caused by dust. If I use the brakes quite frequently, the squeal goes away and returns once more if there is a long delay before the next brake application.

My rear pads have worn at about twice the rate of the front pads.

I assume that the rear brakes are exposed to more dust than the front and that this explains the squealing and the increased wear at the rear.

IME the rear pads only last about 50000 km (and wear out faster than the fronts).

My 2012 90 had it's 30k service a couple of weeks ago.
The mechanic said the pads look like new still.

I use the gears a lot to slow down, & the brakes just to stop though.

My 2010 D90 has done about 92,000 km and at the 90,000 km service was advised that the brake pads would last until the next service.

Interesting, it seems that it's pretty common then. I generally drive on bitumen road but I guess pretty often I do drive on dirt. I've noticed that the rears squeal a lot, it's pretty annoying really.

I live in Canberra and the D90 is a daily driver. That said, I have had two trips to the Gawler Ranges (one via Googs Track), one to the Flinders (via Dangalli and Lake Frome), two to Coffin Bay, Birdsville (with the LR Heritage Drive), etc. Plus quite a few shorter Land Rover Club trips. Most of the longer trips have been via the 'back roads'. I suspect more dirt driving than many who live in our larger cities but not like those who live 'down on the farm'.

I just had a strange issue with my rear pads in my 2011 110.
I was warned by my non LR mech that they were getting low. (55,000Km)
I thought I'd change them at 60K. They started to chew the inner of the passenger side rotor 1500km later.
When I changed them, one of the four pads had worn at least twice as fast the other three?? Which still had 50% meat left.

The piston that had the worn pad was also very hard to compress back into the calliper.

Sorry to hijack with my problem, kinda relevant I guess...

Yep, something to do with Euro pedal feel requirements IIRC.

Good news is that quality aftermarket pads and rotors are dirt cheap.

I don't think that's a hijack, it's relevant to the topic and something to watch out for!

I asked for a ballpark price on replacing the rear pads, i was told around $300 fitted. Does that sound about right?
