DS TDV6 AUX Belt noise

Hi All -
Looking for advice,

I have changed:
Alternator
Belt
Top pulley
middle/bottom adjuster pulley

And am still getting a slight buzzing/bearing noise from the Auxillary belt (Fan belt in old terms).

Any ideas? Could be it be the A/C Compressor on its way out? Or water pump maybe?

Does the noise change when you turn AC on/off? My TDV6 has a soft whine when the AC is on that changes pitch with engine noise - definitely compressor related. I'll let it get a lot worse before I do anything about it... My Audi A4 compressor also gets quite noisy (much noisier than the RRS), has done since I bought it and now has 50K more and no change in the noise.


You can try to remove the belt and spin each pulley by hand to try to replicate the noise. I have also pulled pulleys off and run them against the belt of another running engine to try to find the culprit - could be worth a try for those pulleys that are easily removable.

Hi Rich,

I don't think the compressor changes in the HSE whether A/C is on or off. Not sure.
I had the belt off on the weekend and didn't get any free spin noise from any of the pulley's bar the ones I replaced.

I'll pull it down again this weekend and have another look.

Sorry I should've clarified that - if ECON mode button is lit, the climate control is in economy mode and the AC compressor does not operate (clutch disengaged) so only the front pulley bearing spins. This is how I use mine majority of the time unless hot or foggy, etc. With ECON mode off (ie, if you start the climate control by just pressing AUTO), the compressor does engage. That's how it is in the RRS anyway, I assume the D3 is very similar.

ahha, that is interesting to know! And a great way to find out if it is the internal compressor bearing. I'd assume it isn't cheap to replace.

I have a noisy compressor bearing - noisy when ac on but silent when off - if it makes noise when ac is off then it is likely the pulley bearing (cheap). It could be something else too ... Disco noises ... Bane of my existence !

It is a problem caused by the engine being too damned quiet.

AFAIK the 2.7 TDV6 is fitted with a clutchless a/c compressor, relying on a pulley that breaks and spins freely if the compressor siezes so that the belt doesn't break. It has internal valving to accomplish the equivalent of off. However the 3.0 TDV6 is fitted with a clutch.

You may be right Graeme, it was more of a generic statement, I haven't actually studied the compressor.


It remains though that mine makes a slight bearing noise when it is engaged. But every car I've ever had has done that

Strange enough, the noise is still current and it does not appear to be coming from the A/C side.
