It's so nice to have a S2a!

After a few weeks with my DeeDee off the road (after deciding to replace a leaking exhaust gasket, then rewiring a few things after a bit of a smoke production incident and then replacing the starter motor when it must have sustained some internal damage due to the high current involved in the smoke incident) it's been great to drive the old thing again.
I have the MY12 Deefer 90 sitting there but it's just so satisfying driving the S2a. Sure the windscreen wiper isn't quite managing against the heavy rain we're having and I would stay drier riding my bicycle from place to place, but there's something magical about pottering along in the 44 year old contraption, blipping the throttle and double clutching to get a smooth downshift into 2nd, reaching forward with a rag to wipe the windscreen to demist it and hauling that steering wheel around to fit in a parking spot (then reversing up and trying again).
I wonder if driving a Series1 will be another step change in satisfaction. I'll have to pull finger after the Dakar to get the 1950 80" going.

I know just what you mean. I love my Defender, but nothing else has the magic of an early Series Landy.

I understand what you mean, my daily drive is my '78 series III, full on strong arm steering and I can slide around any corner But the best is my '51 series 1 80" what a pleasure to drive, soooo smooth on ride, love it

Couldn’t agree more, Series Land Rovers offer an unrivalled experience. Every journey seems to present some sort of challenge, or test. In recent weeks I’ve had the delights of a broken clutch, a misfire, absence of headlights and a non-existent handbrake (and not to mention the horn that seemingly comes on at will, resulting in a close encounter with The Bra Boys)... there’s also nothing quite like discovering your handbrake no longer works as you stall the engine on a steep hill and find yourself centimetres.. then millimetres from rolling into your neighbours car – thank goodness for big feet and the ability to operate the brake and accelerator at the same time. Yes, each journey seems to be an ‘experience’ and I enter each week wondering what will be thrown at me.

Only 1pm, can't wait for home time. Touch wood, recent issues have now been fixed.. but there’s a rumble coming from the water pump and main-beam doesn’t work… the question is, this week or next?

i had my series 3 as a daily for 5 months then i took it off the road for the 200tdi conversion, i cant wait to get it back on the road, i always get people asking me how i can drive it but they just don't understand the joys of driving a landrover, its special.

then you get those people that talk smack about how they are no good off road, next thing i'm pulling their 12HT cruiser out of the mud that i just went through with no problems

Yep definitely an experience , I have a squeegee (pardon the spelling) on the dash to keep the screen clear, a Russian ushanka on my balding head for those cold mornings , no sliding window in the drivers door & now a broken speedo cable. Also I've finally worked out why people flash me on the way home , my park lights are brighter than my headlights!
