Help buying a Defender 110 Brissie

I have been in the market for a Defender and have recently viewed and driven one that is a possible purchase. It is a 2005 Defender that is listed on a website..

So far it seems very clean, excepting a little oil around the diffs, could not see much rust (to the eye none) in the usual spots, driving felt good and responsive, no smoke etc and none of the bad noises. Though I could not get the lights to come on when I changed the CDL and Hi/Lo gear, though I did not drive it in that mode, just changed the stick over. From my perspective it seems too good to say no.

Problem is I do not have much experience apart from what I have gained from reading the great compendium that is AULRO. As this maybe my first Defender, apart from the simple checks, I do not have a experienced knowledge base on what or how to recognise/look for in a Defender.

Ideally I would like to get the Defender checked with someone with knowledge to ensure this is not going to have major problems immediately down the track when/if I buy it. Anyone out there who knows a good LR mobile mechanic or would be willing to help look over a vehicle in Brisbane just outside of the city CBD.

Thanks for any help in advance

    Hey Bernd,

I'm in tassie and once bought a defender in Brisbane and had it checked out by mr automotive at I think redcliffe. You'll see heaps of people on here confident in their knowledge of land rovers. I was too.

Good luck and it's worth paying to get the right people to look over then as they require specialized knowledge Toyota mechanics don't have.

I might be able to have a look over it sometime this weekend if you like.

The other 2% made it home.

You say you didn't drive in low range, sometimes it requires to move forward for the gears to change triggering the light. Mine typically engages (specifically the dash light) if not instantly within a wheel rotation.

MLD- was a bit worried to let the clutch out and destroy something. Had thought you could drive to turn the wheels a bit but not accelerate and turn as normal.. Doh.. My inexperience

Will call MR tomorrow and see what they can do or advise. They are a bit far away from the sale point.
