110 (120) first drive

Well spent the arvo playing with new 110 landie. Pulled starter and cleaned up internals and refitted. Started well after I pumped up fuel primer. Bled the clutch after stripping the master and slave cylinders and rebuilt them. Drove car around yard, it drove well. Very happy with the new buy. Now I need to wait till the weekend to clean it up, inside and out.

Well, he who has the most Isuzus wins !!!She looks good, even when dirty.Haven't driven the Perentie for days, except for turning it round on the driveway so SWMBO can take it to work. Grandbabies are visiting so I'm driving "her" D4 (part of the deal for me to buy the Isuzu) so I'm not having to go through landie withdrawal but I miss the silly grin I wear in the Perentie. SWMBO and I are taking the kids back to Newcastle tomorrow, so then I can have my own Landie back. You enjoy your new truck. Got to go, babies are out of the bath dripping on my office floor! That was quick Matt - good work.

I've seen starter contact kits from the US on ebay if yours are really tired. When I did mine a few years back I stripped it and took it in to Ashdown Ingram and got some that were close, and a new set of brushes. Had to file the contact plate a bit to get it to fit, but was pretty close.
From memory the brushes were brazed on, and I couldn't shift them with a soldering iron. Cut them off and soldered the new ones on and all has been happy since.

Ok couldn't wait till weekend, washed inside and out the ute. It's by no means shiny but I got the green moss or whatever it was off. Steve I think the main fault with the starter was a lack of good earth to the engine. When I pulled the starter down it was really in good condition and I only cleaned it up because I had it in pieces. But thanks for the info I will save that for the day it's required.

Earths are a common issue. It's a good idea to have a couple of earth straps from engine/trans to chassis, one across the LH engine mount and one from the transfer to chassis.

Best thing I ever did was run a good heavy earth wire from the battery to the side of the gearbox
Never had another starting drama after that I can walk out and the thing will fire to life quicker than my TDI even if it has sat for 3 months

Bad earths have been a problem on just about every Land Rover I've ever owned. Of course, once you sort that out the juice starts to flow properly and the old wires start catching fire

The wiring loom that runs through the chassis to the back is often dodgy, and most of us here have had the pleasure of pulling out a few hundred feet of dodgy additional wiring added over the years. Then again, what's there isn't complicated and is easily sorted with a bit of patience. Have fun!

You guys were spot on. The earth on the engine mount to chassis was as good as gone. Fitted new earth from battery to transfer case as steveG and lokka said and starts like a new one. Thanks guys
