    Tassie

I was just looking at the Spirit of Tassie trips as it was a maybe for the next trip.

So far... 2 people in the double cabin, and a car... It's almost $2k.

    Have my eyes deceived me?

This seems outrageously expensive considering a trip to NZ for a week in a 5 star hotel which included all our expenses was about the same price of just this ferry ride.

A car on its own just with a driver is usually pretty reasonable, if you have a trailer or caravan and the combination is over a certain length then your pretty much stuffed, especially in peak season.
When we ran race meetings over there I would try and book a spot on the Toll Freight ship that goes to Bernie, much cheaper and includes the driver in the fare, it's not flash though and its a real rough ride compared to the Ferry. If we had to use the Ferry then I would only ever put the driver on it and would fly everyone else over, that was also much cheaper as well.
    Cheers,
    Terry

3-4 times the cost of similar European ferry trips.

They made $15m profit last year, so even if they made no profit, it would only drop fares by about $50. Seems to be an expensive operation to run.

We are booked in one-way for $400 with a vehicle and 2 passengers.

The fares are high because they are trying to stop the boats.
