That tyre size question ... again

I'm going to need tyres for my 88", 67 2.25 petrol llA to finalise the refurb. At the moment it is resting on 7.00 x 16's. I put those numbers through a tyre size calculation and got the response that it 7.00 x 16 is equivalent to 180/100R/16. OK so far.

I'm seeking suggestions for the make, model and size of tyres I should be looking for.

The factors involved in my choice are:
    1. More sealed surface (on-road) driving than unsealed (off-road)
    2. Annual mileage will probably not be more than 5-7500Km
    3. Low cost (it's my No 4 vehicle)
    4. Ready availability of the tyre. (If this means going up a width or two, then OK)
    5. I'm not fussy about who made the tyre.

I've read that tyres that are too wide make the steering a bit of a wrestling match.

    Thanks in anticipation.

There are a number of threads on this subject.
You might want to check that the rims can 'legally' be fitted with 7.50x16's, the LWB rims can (I'll have to hunt down the part numbers).

7.50 x 16 Dunlop Road Grippers come up s/h nearly new as 'take-offs' from Toyota Troopys.
Hunt around and they come up on Epay, Gumtree etc. Maybe a tyre dealership near a Toyota dealer could help.
I paid $90ea fitted & balanced a while back and they were only part worn.

Are 7.50x 6s the closest you can get to 7x16s nowadays?

Thanks for the hint about Toyota Troopers. I'll scout around my local 2nd hand and 4WD tyre shops. That's a good saving - a full set of 2nd hands for less than the price of one or two new ones.

700x16 tyres are available. They are not correct though. Which ratio speedometer do you have?

Haven't got a ratio speedometer. Mine works off a cable.

I don't know the ratio, but here are some numbers

OEM on Series 88" was 6.00 x 16, usually military bar tread. At Leyland T&B we often changed the wheels & tyres on new 88" to 7.50 x 16 as supplied on new 109" at customer request.

So the ratio of your speedometer is 1536 revolutions per mile. This is a SWB speedometer, and is correct with 6.00x16 tyres. 1408 revolutions per mile is for a LWB with 7.50x16 tyres.

    OK. So what's the modern size for a 6.00 x 16?

6.00x16 tyres are still available. I would suggest 7.50x16 tyres though, if you ever want to cruise at 50Mph.

At the risk of kicking off a p|ssing contest, could you name a make and model of 7.5 x 16 tyre that is suitable for a mostly on-road driving, but will handle the occasional off-road weekend.

What ply would you be looking for?

Cruise at 50 Mph? Great! My son can drive the Land Rover and I can ride my 42 WLA Harley and we can stay in convoy.
