    feeling Unsure, Sort Of.

    Been thinking about this for awhile & have decided to post about it. Part of my indecision is that I feel I may have been ripped off, or maybe not, nobody likes to admit they may have been taken.


    The story.
    My 09 D3TDV6 started to play up a few months ago, it would occasionally go into "Limp Mode" but then be OK once re-started. It might not have done this for 1000k or it might do it 3 or 4 times in 100k. I could drive the 900k to work no problem then have it happen several times on the drive home 3 weeks later.


    So, last service I asked the dealer to check this out, was told it was the fuel injection pump & it would need replacing for about $3500. As I was in the middle of extending our house at the time I decided to hold off for a bit until we had got over those bills, so the trip home before last I took her down to have the work done as the problem was becoming more regular.
    So they had the car for a day, I called to pick her up about 4:30 & they had it out on a test drive, they then told me it had stopped & would not restart, it was coming back on a truck.
    So they gave me a Freelander2 to drive home & asked me to phone the next day.
    When I phoned back they said it was the fuel sensor, be a couple of days to get 1. So I phoned the boss, said I would be a couple of days late to work & enjoyed driving the Freelander for a couple of days.
    Then they phone me to tell me the part is in & she will be fixed the next day, I drive back (this is about 2 hours each way) & guess what? It has died on it's test drive again.
    Now I'm getting annoyed.
    I hire a horrible Toyota Workmate 2wd ute to get back to work.
    They phone to say they have found an air leak in the fuel lines & they will have to be replaced.
    So a couple of weeks latter I drive the horrible ute back & pick up my D3.


    All up this has cost me about $5000. Thankfully my boss has offered to pay for the horrible hire ute.


    My D3 seems to be running very well, no problems thus far.


    So I think I paid for a fuel pump I didn't need, a sensor I didn't need, a fuel filter I didn't need, a timing belt kit I didn't need (is that "The" timing belt or just for the fuel pump?) & a whole lot of labour I didn't need.
    This is not to mention the fuel back & forth & inconvenience.

    I wanted it fixed, I love my car, I missed her & I never realised how rough the road was out to Doomadgee until I drove that Toyota here & back. I am very pleased to have her back & seemingly in good health.


    But, I can't help feeling I got ripped off.

    Sounds like the standard repair by replacing parts until the problem is fixed and charge the customer all the way.

    So what was it - the fuel pump, the sensor, the air lines - will not be all of them.

    Clearly the fuel pump and sensor did not fix the issue so I would not be paying for that.

    When they had it for the extra few weeks at the end and fixed it - what did they do?

    That was when they replaced the Pipe-fuel.


    The parts replaced over all were:
    Pump - Fuel Injection
    Kit - Timing belt
    Element - Fuel Filter
    Manifold - Fuel Supply
    Tube
    Pipe - Fuel.


    The order they were replaced in according to the Invoice.
    High Pressure Fuel Pump
    Drive belt
    Fuel Rail Pressure sensor
    Fuel pipes


    I think the fuel filter was replaced the first day.

    I do not know the law, but in fairness either:

    1. Pay for the first thing they "fixed" and the rest should be under a warranty for that repair or

    2. Pay for the thing they did last, which actually fixed the problem.

    The rest of the work was done in error and you should not be responsible to pay for their unnecessary parts or labour. I can only wish you good luck.

    You could seek advice from consumer affairs.

    Exactly why I do not use dealers anymore, they will hit you hard and do not understand engines like the mechanics of yesterday, they are "technicans"... have a guess, pull a part out and if it doesn't work have another guess

    I assume you used the main dealership? Next time you need any work, service or otherwise, suggest using Landy Centre Cairns (in West St). He really knows these cars and is very good value.

    The fuel pump and labour would be the biggest expense. Sounds like they might have applied the very old method of 'try this - someone else is paying' ie a best guess.

    From memory your D3 had a few Km under the belt. Having a new high pressure is a plus. You've got one installed pretty cheap (unless prices have dropped).

    $5 grand is a huge hit. But it's probably now good for another 200,000 km or more.

    I'd probably put it down to experience and think twice before using them again.

    You've still got the best D3 ever build, arguably better than a base 09 D4.

    Yes, sort of the way I've been looking at it.
    I have mostly a new fuel system so that shouldn't bugger up for a while.
    Yes, I think next service or whatever I will try the independent.
    I must say the folks I was dealing with did try to lessen the pain. First they gave me a car to get around in & they charged "Trade Price" on the parts once they couldn't fix it, what ever trade price is.
    If we hadn't just spent most of our savings on the house it would not have been so bad. When I decided to get it fixed I was expecting a bill around 3 grand, not almost 5. Then there was the time & fuel going back & forth & hanging around in the city with nothing to do.
    Anyway, what is, is.

    PS They gave me some sort of Mercedes Benz wagon to drive to Yungaburra where the Freelander was. I thought this will be good! What a disappointment.
    It had stop/start, so I thought I'd killed it at the first set of lights. It had very rough suspension, a noisy diesel, the power up the Gillies was all or nothing & you sat so low I thought I would get a gravel rashed bum. It did go round corners well though.
    SO pleased to have my D3 back!
