    D4 Window Tint

Window tint in a D4.I called into a Tint a Car shop, the most well known chain in WA yesterday.
They showed me 2 films that are the darkest legal. They looked very light, the lighter of the 2 has to go on the front side windows, the slightly darker is ok for the others.
The lady was of indian origin and her tone of voice and attitude smacked of telemarketer so I dindnt push the point and wasnt interersted in doing business there.
She said my glass is factory coloured and these tints make the glass very dark.I pointed to my D4 and said that isnt coloured glass, she told me it was.Im sure she was thinking privacy glass.
Anyhow I didnt get time to visit another store to get to chat with an AWEstralian.
I was quoted $520 for the D4 and $480 to do the Territory. She also mentioned a package with paint and seat protection for around $1000.
    How do the prices sound?????
    Thanks
    Andrew

I am also looking for a window tint for my new D4. Unfortunately it seems any 'good' quality window tint is goint to cost an arm and a leg.
My first choice was to use 3M films - I specify ONLY these professionally (for commercial buildings) and I don't see why their car tinting films wouldn't also be of superior quality - I don't want to have to do this twice!
I also don't want the same sort of excessively dark tinting that you see in the Falcodore pimp-mobiles and the like, but I do want a high thermal performance similar to low-E commercial glasses which have a hard ceramic thermal coating on the inside face and are very effective at reducing thermal loading and therefor running costs - albeit at a higher intial capital cost.
The nearest equivalent I have found in car tinting is the 3M Crystalline series and this is pretty much only available from DMS Tinting & Graphics Unit 2 44 Hutton St Osborne Park and I have booked in there tomorrow morning. I haven't quite decided on the 50 or 60% light transmittance yet - they both have exceptionally good claimed heat rejection (56% and 53% respectively) which is equivalent to 'privacy' tinting with only 5% light transmittance. I really hate that 'black' window look and you can't see through privacy glazing at night at all.
I will try and remember to take some before and after pix.
    cheers

Oh and I forgot to say how much it is going to cost...
A whacking $725 for full 4WD installation less $50 for RAC membership
    Lifetime material & labour warranty.
I also went to TintaCar in Cannington on the way home and was totally put off by the hard sell and bulls**t from the lady at the counter. They seem to be more focussed on the pimp-mobile crowd.

In all states BUT SA the D90 is legal..

The D4... Well... Passed 2 SAPOL inspections.. (Granted both former British Police)

Tint on a D4 should be $400-500 range...

    D4 Window Tint

    Guys,

Whatever you get, make sure it is not metallic tint. Otherwise your radio reception will be severly compromised.

Nothing wrong with dark tint - just personal preference!
    My understanding (WA rules) is:
No tint on windscreen (except for a shallow 'sun visor' band at top.
No darker than 35% light transmittal on driver/passenger window (i.e. forward of B pillar)
No darker than 20% from B pillar back.
Bear in mind the D4 comes with Pilkington Optikool which has a slight green tint. It is a 'thermal' glass (rather than a Low-E glass) so reduces heat by absorption rather than reflection. I can't find a spec for the actual light transmittance but I think it is about 90-95% so this 5% reduction needs to be added to the tint film to arrive at the legal limit. Most '35' tint films actually have a light transmittance of around 40% to allow for this.
The claimed thermal performance of the 3M Crystalline is very impressive and allows a much lighter tint.
    cheers

    Indeed...

I just can't stand the glare as it strains my eyes after hours at the wheel..

I can sit in mine and I'm in shadow
    Perfect for eating miles...
