    Measuring performance increases from modifications

    Hi Gang,

I have managed to acquire some sponsorship for the Defender that is used by a not for profit research group i volunteer for.

I have been fortunate enough to have the following donated:

    EGR removal kit
    2.5" straight through exhaust
    Stage 1 remap

The last item on the list of things i am trying to get the group is an upgraded intercooler, so if you know anyone that is feeling generous please get in touch Perhaps one of the vendors would be able to help out. Measuring performance increases from modifications

What i would like to do is measure the affect each modification has on the overall performance. I have found a garage willing to do the dyno runs free of charge. This is primarily for the blog i will be writing regarding the Defender fitout and the groups research; and will also be given as feedback to the sponsors.

This is what i was thinking for the progression of modification.

Stock dyno run to have as a base run
Install EGR removal kit, then dyno run.
    Install Exhaust, then dyno run,
Remap ECU with stage 1 remap, then dyno run.
If and when we are able to get an intercooler, install it, then dyno run
And finally stage 2 remap, then dyno run.

I have ordered these modifications the way i have because they seem like the natural progression one would take when upgrading their defender. Granted many may get a remap and egr removal only, but i feel this will still give usable data.

I look forward to your input.

    Question

Only thing different I would do, is install the intercooler before any remap.

It should be interesting to have a quantitative value for things like EGR removal and exhaust because since they are so easy to do.

For things where it is know to be a noticeable increase, i.e. intercooler, it will be good to see by how much and in what areas of the curve.

Only other upgrade i can think of that i wont be measuring is increase from a VGT

    Question

IMHO, you won't get much of an increase from an intercooler on its own. My understanding is that it will enable a remap to work much better, hense to fit an intercooler before any remap?
