    Steering wheel removal question

On previous Land rovers I have prised the land rover motif to gain access to the steering wheel retaining nut. The 2002 TD5 is just a centre block no motif. How do I get this off without damage?

It's the same steering wheel as fitted to late 80s early 90s Range Rovers, just with a bigger centre pad.

It's held in place by 2 lugs & will pull off if you can grab it well enough.

Check the link for your wheel...

    Web Rover

If its a type C (most likely) or a D it comes off like Scouse described.

Just hook your fingers behind the centre hub it and pull it towards you. If, its a C its 2 lugs and if its a D its held in place by four rubber lugs, one on each of the corners.

Much simpler operation that it used to be on the old 300Ti type wheel.

    Cheers,

    What size nut/spanner/hammer?

What size nut is holding the steering wheel on?
Is it the same on all models?

And how hard do I need to hit the spanner with my "persuader" to get it to release?!?!

    Cheers

    Hi Kieren

Had a look the other day and it looks to be something around a 19mm with one of those "spikey" washers underneath to prevent it coming loose.

I think the nut will come off reasonably easy, but lifting the wheel off the splines has its challenges!

    Cheers,

    Lou

Loosen the nut, but don't remove it completely - you can then hit the steering wheel from below with the heel of your hand to releases it, and it wont clobber you in the face.

I do the opposite - from above on the rim at 9 o'clock & 3 o'clock alternately to break the taper. It's usually loose within a few quick taps.

I have just measured the nut across the flats and it is 22mm on my 2002 td5.
I usually undo the nut and remove the washer then replace the nut until the face is just proud of the shaft end place a brass packer on the nut and with the aid of a puller screw down on the packer then while under tension apply a measured even tap on centre.
The tapped puller holes in the steering wheel are about 8mm but wont know till to morrow if they are metric. I removed the steering wheel centre piece as you guys advised it came off easy being now in the sun. It had 4 lugs

Can't get my bastard wheel off The nuts been loose for 3 years as I hoped that would help ....... to no avail.

I occasionally remove the rubber centre and try hitting the wheel from below, from above, using a puller and still no luck.

    One day maybe
