Bushes on valve rocker shaft

Hi

I have a SII engine in my 1977 SIII SWB... i am in the process of stripping down the engine and noticed that the bushes are missing from the rocker shaft ... split shafts ... they are in the parts list, but are they needed ???

yes, if youre thiking about what I think your talking about these are the bearings the rocker arms run on.

you may still have them but they will have changed colour and will appear to be just part of the rocker itself.

its a bit of a stretch of my memory but I think the tdi rocker shaft will drop in and do the same job for you and the rockers to suit are a fit as well. but its been a very very long time since Ive done a rocker shaft on a series engine, normally they last pretty well and just require the arms rebushed.

I cant remember and dont have my series manuals but there is also a washer like bush that sits between the springs and the rockers as well as the rockers and the towers, its paramount that these be fitted if you want to have reliable oil pressure throughout the head as they seal up the rocker arms on the sides.


if you can upload a photo of the bit you're talking about instead of me rlying on memory I might be able to give you more definitive advise.

I think I see my problem, I thought the bushes went between the rockers, but they are the bushes for the rockers ... The diagram is a little misleading ... Thanks guys

they are the rocker arm bushes, a push fit into the rocker arm (usually preinstalled on new rockers) and slide fit onto the shaft.
