Stange sound - result - electronic diff req

Down in Tasmania with van in tow, sounded like a tyre delaminating, jacked up and checked could not find any problems, it was only when up on hoist and spun the wheels by hand that we could feel vibrations in rear diff housing, drained the oil and found an inch high pile of steel filings on drain plug magnet. Now waiting for replacement parts and time for JC to fit.

Car has towed 3T van for 70k+ and has 230k on the clock and will do a lot more yet.

    ouch sorry to hear that.

Have you checked rest of the drive train? Front diff, transfer case and transmission?

All else checked and is ok, just waiting on TNT to deliver to Hobart, expected by 5pm Thursday, then on JC to fit next week.

Diagnosing had me stuffed, it really sounded like a delaminating tyre, jacked car up and no play in wheels so bearings ok, no bubbles in tyres etc.

We are very lucky for it to happen when we are camped in van park and close to reliable help.

Sorry for the silly question but you have an E-diff and need a new one? Or did you do a diff and are taking the opportunity to upgrade?

    Hi James,

It's not an upgrade, the existing one is an electronic one, so we are just replaceing the whole thing with a new one, I am told it will be cheeper than fixing old one.

A normal diff cost me $1600 fitted by the dealer (including diagnosis and alignment etc). An ediff would probably be more than that.

Costs so far $2500 for E-diff shipped to Hobart then add oil and fitting 3-4 hours labour and I'm also getting the rear anti-sway bar rubbers and rear wheel berings replaced as well as car has towed the van with around 350kg on the hitch for heaps of k's.

    All up $3050 plus labour.

Good plan. I regret not getting them to do that when mine was done.

i was quoted by the dealer around $3600 for part only.Luckily mine is under warranty.

If yours is LR genuine new, that is a good price.
