    2005 D3 2.7 TDV6 - High Pressure Fuel Pump

    Hi Guys,

Only just bought the D3 but already had some issues, managed to fit a new thermostat housing myself (sits under the inlet manifold) but now have a new issue.

Garage computer reporting low fuel pressure, symptoms are (upon acceleration) a message about engine control followed by special programs disabled and limp mode with no power. Slowing and/or stopping help with some power return and engine restart clears the fault - until I accelerate faster than a cyclist again and the cycle goes on. You can slowly wind it up to 100km/h.

Done lots of reading and and seems the garage is correct is correct about HPFP replacement. LR specialist is quoting $3000 excl GST while LR themselves have quoted $2250 (parts, labour & GST) Given my recent misfortunes with both our vehicles I am thinking of fitting it myself to save money.

I have founds a few threads about replacing the HPFP belt & tensioner but has anyone ever replaced the pump itself?

The garage computer also reported EGR issues but after reading it seems with a 2005 I can just fit the blanking plates.

I decided to see how hard it is to get to the pump belt as well as the pump, removed the battery, plastic housing, heat shields and disconnected two wiring harness - moving them over to the left. Pump a real git to get to, so decide it's a no go but while I am here i will blank the EGR with the kit I bought.

All back together, no missing screws, checked all connected. Go to start and am greeted with Park Brake Fault, Transmission Fault Limited Gears, HDC Fault, Suspension Light, DSC Light and Park brake is Amber.

None of these were there before. Everything checked again, hard reset, still the same.

The drive is interesting, you can floor it up to 60km/h - above 3000rpm and no issues until I hit 60 km/h when I hit with the original problem.

    Any clues?

    Maybe ...

    Hi Cyberboblouth,
I expect that there's an issue with the Brake lights ....... Yes, Bizarre I know.
I'd replace the Brake light switch followed by the Brake light lamps ( check if they work)Your issue does sound electrical.
I'd also suggest that you should buy a Code reader. IID tool is very popular
Discovery's are great cars. They also have many undocumented features that cascade to become an avalanche. The Brake lamps are one excellent example.

Let us know how you get on.

Have you found the Disco3.co.uk Site yet?

I would recheck the harnesses including each pin and socket with associated wire for connectivity issues.

Some D3 Tdv6 had a recall on HPFP, might be prudent to check your serial number and then Google Land Rover, and become enlightened and confused.

I did replace a brake light bulb but that was weeks ago and all was well after. I removed the brake switch last night, took it apart and cleaned all the terminals - there was black charring on one contact point. Before & after removal the brake lights and actuation of them was perfect.

I also unclipped the harness again and checked all connections, I will give it another go and might clean up the contact point of one of them - not the one with 3x identical connectors but the one below and in-front, closes to the battery.

I have a D900 scanner but it doesn't read the D3, I will have a Google today and purchase. I joined Disco3.co.uk as someone on there is having identical issues and I waiting to see how they get on with fixing it. As I own a 2005 I am not on the recall list for the HPFP.

So back into the engine bay, unclip everything including the harnesses. Check everything - nothing out of place. Put back together - fault gone. Must have been a bad connection somewhere.

I am still left with the original issue but the garage can deal with that. It is either the low or high pressure diesel pump (or both).

Can of CRC electrical contact cleaner or a felt pad with handle as used by electronic trade with isoproyl alchohol and clean all contacts.

Mine is a 2007, MY08 and had that pump replaced under warranty, I also negotiated replacement of the air compressor as it was a known fault even though mine was not on the recall list.

It is worth discussing with LR as this HPFP is a very well known issue especially on early models. Fit for purpose comes to mind . . .

    HPFP Replacement

" LR specialist is quoting $3000 excl GST while LR themselves have quoted $2250 (parts, labour & GST) Given my recent misfortunes with both our vehicles I am thinking of fitting it myself to save money."

Hi cyberboblouth, I have an issue with my HPFP also. At the last service Barbagallos told me it was leaking and should be replaced. I get the odd diesel smell from time to time but mostly it's fine and no obvious drips and no running issues/faults like you have. I told them not to proceed at the time as they said it would be "about $2300" which squares with your quote. Which independent specialist did you go to? I'm thinking about taking my (2007 TDV6 HSE) car away from Barbagallos as they are so expensive and I've been casting about for recomendations of a cheaper but still Disco-friendly alternative in Perth ... However, your specialist quoted even more! I don't fancy trying this job myself, it's sounds like a cow of a project.

P.S. Dave (Hogarthde) - I checked already and my MY08 car didn't have the recall. The air compressor was replaced some years ago at the expense of a tyre supplier (who will remain nameless) who's idiot employee used it as a jacking point ... at least he paid up without arguing!

    Cheers, Gavin
