Bike carrier on a spare wheel carrier

Hi,
I am getting a spare wheel carrier for my D4, probably, KAYmar one.

I am also looking at ways to carry a couple of bikes while towing my van.

One option is the Thule 963pro which is attached to the spare wheel.
Thule Australia ? Products ? Bike Carriers ? Thule 963PRO Spare Me 2 Bike

Just wondering if any one has done this or have any thoughts on whether it would be to much weight for the carrier.

The benefits of this option over carrying them on the van are

1. I do not have much room on the van
2. I can use this when not towing my van
3. Bikes are with the van, means if we want to go some where for a ride we don't have to take the van.

What material are your bike frames? You need to consider if you would have them there if going off-road. I haven't used a crossbar mounted frame for years but you need to consider the stress you are putting on the frame if hanging from the crossbar.

Imho wheel mount carriers are better for your bike.

Understand what you say but the bikes re not carbon fibre or the likes.

You may need to weigh your bikes. The weight limit on that rack is 34kg a couple of my older MTB's that aren't carbon would go pretty close to that weight.

I've used a lot of Thule products and generally find them to be a lot better than most of the others out there. So from that point of view would recommend them.

Yep agree as they are MTBs

I have Thule carriers for my car already but can't use them while towing.

Do you think the wheel carrier could handle the weight.?

Fiamma have one for the a frame but it looks a bit flimsy.

On bitumen it would probably be ok. Not sure about off-road or even gravel.


The other option you have is roof mounted carriers. We've just been through this as the roof mounted carriers are a bit tall on a Defender. I went with the iSi carrier but as we have a camper trailer we have the option of using the rear hitch on the trailer.

I contacted ISi earlier today.
They do seem a good option but a bit expensive.

But I guess you get what you pay for and am still considering them.
