Making Seats/Plans

Are the original seats difficult to make/has anybody come across a set of plans in their research?

Haven't seen any plans but, I re-padded Ralph's seats, it was pretty easy but I did have the original bases and a set of spares to work off. I got the padding from the local foam and Rubber shop and the vinyl was just from those useless idiots at bunnings. I re-used the same clips, tapping them on with a small hammer (whilst continually hitting my fingers). they came up alright, but I will be having them recovered professionally before too long.

I did the same, it was pretty easy and came up well. I bought the vinyl from the foam shop though, there are some vinyls that are better in UV light.

I haven't got anything to work from - that's my problem, so I'll have to see what I can do

The bases are plywood and easy to make but there is a steel frame (maybe only on Series III) that surrounds it.
The backs are a steel pressing, harder to make.

Another option is a set of DeLuxe seats from the UK they are relatively cheap but cost a bit to freight. TR206 | Front deluxe black vinyl seat set




They are made from MDF rather than ply & steel but do the job.

I could sketch the base dimensions. The drivers & passenger bases are the same size unless you have an adjustable seat.
I made up hardwood strips for the base to sit on, if properly positioned they hit against bolt heads & stop the seat moving forward.

I had to re-position the strips on the DeLuxe bases, in fact I replaced the thin MDF with the correct thickness hardwood.





Go to an automotive vinyl supplier, good quality vinyl is about $35 per metre. I use these guys in VIC, they are also in WA Daley's - Contact Information
They can also supply the correct thread but you need an industrial sewing machine to do the job.

Put a wanted ad on the forum, often when parting out a vehicle nobody wants the seats unless they are near perfect.

Just finished these tonight.


No trick tools of anything like that. I just bought 75mm foam for seats (hmmm, that new car smell!) and UV resistant vinyl. I reused the metal frames, these were still very serviceable, and remade new timber bases, just with 12mm ply and drilled air holes in it in the standard size and places.

The vinyl I just pulled over the foam and either reused the factory clips to clip it to the frame (I stood on the base to slightly compress the foam to get tension on the vinyl) or stapled it back to the timber base. I didn't do any stitching or anything like that, it's currently not my scene, but rather just folded the vinyl like you were covering a book or wrapping a Christmas present.

This is how they've turned out.

Just looking at doing the seats in my IIa slunnie. When you have some spare time could you post a couple of pics of the bottom of the base and the back of the back so I can copy your folds. I know it's only a bit over a month but how is it standing up with just the folds and clips? Is it all staying together?

Sure can! The build is still coming together, so the seats haven't really been used, but the vinyl is clipped in the same way as LR made them. LR did however stitch the seat, where I just folded them - same as wrapping a Christmas present.
