    Repainting Axles

I am rebuilding Fawkes and about to do the axles. Unlike the chassis they won't be sand blasted so am I good to degrease, clean, sand and then paint over the old stuff or should I prime over the old stuff? Assume I won't need to etch prime as I'm not going back to old metal.

If anybody can point me to threads on this I'm happy to research but struggled to find any.

Assume paint will be same as I use on the chassis?

After a good degrease, rinse and dry, spot coat any bare metal with etch primer, rough up any old paint with a scotch brite then whack a coat of whatever you used on the chassis over the whole lot.

    Simples.

Why don't you get them sand blasted? They can do it without disassembling everything. But if the axle needs other overhauling then why not strip it down, tape the stubs and do it properly. You won't need to strip the diff centre if that is ok, just plug the ends.

I took mine back to bare metal with a wire brush on an angle grinder, then primed and painted with the same paint I used on the chassis (enamal with hardener added). I was able to leave the centres in, and just seal the ends of the housings.
    Cheers, Martin
