Premium Surround Sound Upgrade Retrofit

I posted this in my Members Ride thread, but it seems not so many people look in that section of the forum.

If your Freelander 2 has the 9-speaker "Mid Line" Alpine-branded audio system it's possible to upgrade it to the 14-speaker "Premium" surround system.

Likewise in the later models it's possible to retrofit a Meridian system.

For the Alpine system you need to simply add the speakers, and change the amp to the surround sound version. Then edit the CCF to activate the amp.

Parts:

LR001695, 1x, center dash speaker
LR001694, 2x, side dash speakers
LR001845, 1x, D-pillar with speaker
LR001846, 1x, D-pillar with speaker
LR007312, 9x, mounting screws
LR006214, 9x, mounting tabs for screws
LR009653, 1x, Premium Surround Amp

The amp is a killer, I was quoted $2713 incl GST from the local dealer
But you can find the amps second hand at more reasonable prices, the full p/n is 6H52-18C808-DD, this amp is also used in the Jaguar XF with the 440W "Jaguar" premium sound system.

The quote for all the parts locally was $3175 incl GST.

Sourcing a 2nd hand amp, and buying the speakers from a UK supplier, came in around $350 all up.

The wiring is all in place, it's just a matter of fitting the speakers and amp, then editing the CCF to activate it.

I bought the genuine Land Rover screws & tabs, was pennies in the end...



Dash already has the grilles, and the wiring, just missing the speakers.











Actually the two dash speakers are just wired in paralell to the tweeters in the doors, so you can fit them without needing to upgrade the amp & they work, would also be an improvement without going the whole hog.





Center fill speaker



"Surround" amp, actually came out of a Jaguar XF... you can see the extra connector in the loom, that's for the rear pillar speakers and the center fill in the dash.



Difference between the amps.





D-pillar panels with speakers built in.









All back together and looking factory.

The amp is not exactly plug-n-play, the amp has to be activated, a small edit in the Car Configuration File with the IDS/SDD....

But once that's done...





It's a massive improvement over the "Mid-Line" system but honestly still not as great as the Audiophile-spec system in the XJR...

For the $350 it cost me in parts i reckon well worth it. But definitely not worth the $3500 I was quoted by the dealer...

Start to finish a shade over 2 hours, including the programming.

It would be a similar procedure with the later Meridian system, but different parts.

Just wanted to add, i had a play around with a few different CD's, and adjusted the bass/treble, subwoofer & surround settings, it's definitely a lot better than before.

Perhaps the reason it wasn't so awesome at first was the wife's Adele album was the test piece...

Wow Cambo, thanks for all the info! I have the stock sound system as well (2010 LR2 HSE 3.2 I6) and would really like the upgraded system with the center speaker and rear pillar speakers.

I was wondering though...I thought there were already side speakers on the dash to go with the tweeters in the top of the door and the woofers in the middle of the door. The stock system is 9 speakers...I thought two in the dash, four in the front doors(total) and two in the rear doors (total) + sub = 9. If there aren't speakers in the dash with the stock system, where are the other 2 speakers?

Welcome to the forum rybone.

The speakers in the corners of the dashboard might already be fitted to the Mid-Line systems in later models (making an 11-speaker system) as they are wired in paralell to the tweeters in the doors and will work without changing the amp. Some guys in the UK said they already had the dash speakers in their 2011 models.

There are tweeters in the rear doors as well, next to the midbass speakers, if you look close you will see them.

So that makes 9 speakers on the Mid Line system

1 subwoofer
2 rear door midbass
2 rear door tweeters
2 front door midbass
2 front door tweeters

= 9 speakers

add the two in the dash = 11 speakers

Change the amp, edit the CCF, and add the center dash and the d-pillar surround speakers = 14 speakers

Note that this upgrade might not be possible if your vehicle has the Base sound system, i.e. without the sub already.

Hi All

I have a 2007 Freelander2. I wanna ask how do I know if the amplifier is working or not?

if the amp dies, does the head unit still work? I tried to find the fuse to the factory amp and I cant find anything.

Can I ask I noticed two orange wires with red light fibre optics. Actually only one wire has a red light. the other wire didn't emit any light. Is this normal?
